Description of Work

Summer 2026 (May 2026 - July 2026)
Full-time Work Schedule,
Monday- Friday, 40 hours per week

Position: ESTP Intern and AIAS Intern
Location: Hybrid- Century Center 1020 Birch Ridge Drive Raleigh 27610
Internship Duration: 10-week internship (May 26, 2026- July 31, 2026)

About the Internship

This internship offers students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience within NCDIT Transportation’s Enterprise System Testing and Performance (ESTP) and Application Intelligence, Analytics, and Standards (AIAS) teams. Interns will support application modernization, security evaluation, system testing, data analytics, and architecture initiatives by working with enterprise applications and frameworks. Through collaboration with managers, business analysts, and cross-functional technical teams, interns will help assess application risk, support compliance with OWASP and NIST standards, contribute to testing and analytics efforts, and participate in structured change management processes—building valuable experience in cybersecurity, data-driven decision-making, and enterprise IT operations.

1. Enterprise System Testing and Performance (ESTP)
2. Application Intelligence, Analytics, and Standards (AIAS)

These internships provide hands-on experience and valuable professional development opportunities in key areas of enterprise systems and data analytics.

Position Details

Enterprise System Testing and Performance (ESTP) Intern

Responsibilities

•Execute manual and automated test cases for citizen-facing and internal enterprise applications.
•Support application modernization efforts by evaluating software source code for:
-OWASP vulnerabilities
-NIST security standards compliance
-Open-source software safety and licensing risks

•Perform tool migration and data validation to ensure accuracy, integrity, and performance.
•Assist with test automation, performance testing, and documentation of testing processes.
•Analyze application data and testing results to identify risks, defects, and improvement opportunities.
•Collaborate with managers, business analysts, and cross-functional teams to gather requirements and support secure system solutions.

Preferred Skills/Experience

•Strong attention to detail with an analytical mindset.
•Familiarity with the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and system testing methodologies.
•Basic knowledge of cybersecurity principles, application security testing, or data analysis.
•Ability to document processes and communicate findings clearly.
•Academic background in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Information Technology, or Data Science/Analytics.

Application Intelligence, Analytics, and Standards (AIAS) Intern

Responsibilities

•Participate in NCDIT Transportation’s modernization initiatives by supporting the AIAS framework.
•Conduct application intelligence and risk analysis, including evaluating applications against security and compliance standards (OWASP, NIST).
•Assist with application onboarding into the AIAS framework, interpreting risk findings and providing technical insights.
•Contribute to AIAS application architecture designs and support adherence to change management processes.
•Perform data mining and transform insights into actionable reports and presentations for stakeholders.
•Develop data visualizations and dashboards using Power BI or similar analytics tools.
•Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to translate business and technical requirements into architecture and solution recommendations.

Preferred Skills/Experience

•Proficiency or strong interest in data analytics, application architecture, or cybersecurity risk analysis.
•Experience with Power BI, data visualization tools, or analytics platforms preferred.
•Understanding of application security concepts, system standards, or enterprise frameworks.
•Academic background in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Data Science/Analytics, or Information Technology.
Professional Development (Both Positions)

Both positions will help develop the following soft skills:

•Business etiquette and professional communication.
•Effective email and stakeholder correspondence.
•Managing, analyzing, and documenting large volumes of technical and operational information.
•Working within cross-functional teams in a government IT environment.
Preferred Technical and Professional Skills: (Both Positions)
•Proficiency in Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams).
•Experience with SharePoint applications or websites.
•Strong organizational, time management, and documentation skills.
•Clear written and verbal communication abilities.
•Analytical and problem-solving skills to assess risk, improve processes, and support modernization initiatives.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be a currently enrolled full-time student in a bachelors, masters, or professional level program at an accredited or recently graduated from a North Carolina Historically Black College/University (HBCU) or Minority Serving Institution (MSI) within the past year.

  • 24 credit hours completed.

  • Minimum overall GPA of 2.5 (on 4.0 scale)

  • Has legal right to work in the U.S. and do not need sponsorship
