Description of Work

Have you ever wondered what it might be like to work at an Aquarium? The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher is seeking an Exhibits Graphic Designer to perform creative and technical work in graphic design, signage, and digital layouts. The position works within the Exhibits team to strategize the exhibit's look and feel, and design exhibit graphics, signage, and promotional items for exhibits. All designers assist with repairs, cleaning, and general improvements throughout the Aquarium facility. The position performs all steps of the graphic production (file preparation, layout, printing, laminating, mounting, and installing graphics), maintains and troubleshoots graphics equipment including the large format printer and cutter, laminator, and assists with stocking graphics supplies. The Exhibits Graphic Designer is a team player reporting directly to the Exhibits Curator and will work closely with the exhibits team, aquarium staff, researchers, and outside contractors to ensure quality and safety of the exhibit, specimens, volunteers, and visitors. The position aims to improve proficiency in design programs such as Adobe Creative Suite and drafting software and is expected to stay up to date on current technologies and design trends. The designer attends meetings as requested, may be asked to serve on Aquarium committees, and must be able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

• Plan and design exhibit graphics (interpretive graphics, infographics, identification labels, banners, aquarium promotional graphics, digital presentations, AR/VR components, videos, etc.) 
• Facilitate graphic production, assembly, maintenance, and repair of interior / exterior and offsite displays, signage, and graphic panels
• Participate in the overall process for exhibit or habitat design
• Coordination and supervision of subcontractors in the production / installation of graphic related materials and peripherals

Recruitment Range: $31,084 - $44,473

Candidates meet the minimum qualifications of this position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement. Vacancy specific knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) and/or management preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following are preferred:

Management Prefers:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and proficiency in graphic design, layouts, illustration, accessibility graphics, and scientific illustration
  • Demonstrated experience with various graphic design software systems, including but not limited to Adobe Creative Suites (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop), AfterEffects, Pi Presents, etc.
  • Must have the ability to perform large-format printing, graphic production, fabrication, and installation
  • Experience in fabrication and repair of exhibitry, utilizing CAD , SketchUp or Drafting skills
     

Position/Physical Requirements:

  • Weekend, evening, and holiday work will be required.
  • Must meet DNCR Fleet Safety Guidelines and have ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
  • Recommended candidate will be subject to a background check prior to hiring.

Minimum Education and Experience

The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher, 20 miles south of Wilmington, NC, in Kure Beach, overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and Cape Fear River. A living collection of more than 4,000 animals in 93,000 square feet of exhibit space attracts and engages more than 500,000 visitors each year. The Aquarium is surrounded by protected woodland, marsh, and beach. Visitors often plan to stop at sites adjacent to the Aquarium - Fort Fisher State Recreation Area and historic Fort Fisher Civil War Museum. Fort Fisher Aquarium is a unique place to visit and work.
