Description of Work

This is an Engineering Technician III position located in the Century Center Resident Engineer’s Office that will serve as a lead project inspector and will support higher level engineers in the administration of medium to large highway construction projects. Monitors daily progress of projects and resolves constructability issues to maintain project schedules. Direct and schedule the work of technicians in inspecting every phase of a construction project to ensure it is built according to plans and specifications in a timely and cost-effective manner. Manages all aspects of assigned construction projects with limited supervision from higher level engineers. May supervise and train multiple technicians, including Department employees and contract construction inspectors. Employee must be able to obtain and maintain certifications required to perform material sampling and testing related to this position. May be required to work nights, weekends, holidays and extended hours as necessary.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range:  NC11 / $43,738.00 - $76,542.00

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision.
  • Experience with mathematical functions including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry
  • Customer service experience related to resolving problems that involve explaining complicated engineering concepts to various customer groups.
  • Experience working in a team environment to complete assignments.

Additional Expectations:

Employee must be able to operate a motor vehicle. Ability to take notes.  Good communication skills are needed.  Demonstrated ability to supervise the activities of lower-level employees and instruct them to proper work methods.  Will maintain project diaries on a daily basis including correspondence with contractors. Employee will perform both office and field duties. Projects may last for several months or longer.  May be subject to a wide range of hazards such as rough or uneven terrain and/or work in adverse weather conditions to include heat or cold. Employee will be on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  May be required to work nights or weekends. Safety toe shoes required.

Minimum Education and Experience

Associate’s degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
