Description of Work

This is an Engineering Supervisor III position with the Signing & Delineation Unit/Western. This supervisory position is responsible for reviewing and approving internally or privately prepared signing and pavement marking plans, specifications, & estimates (PS&E) packages, encroachment agreements, and purchase order contracts. Inclusive with this responsibility is the review or approval of preliminary and final design concepts, quantity estimates, and specifications to measure compliance with state and federal guidelines, using design software for sign messages and sign supports. Review complex signing and pavement marking plans with the Roadway Design Unit to ensure highway design elements meet federal guidelines regarding traffic flow and lane continuity.

Salary Grade and Salary Range:  NC23 and $78,579 - $136,517

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Thorough knowledge and interpretation of local, state, and federal rules and regulations governing the area of signing and delineation.
  • Experience supervising permanent employees, contractors and/or consultants.
  • Experience communicating major and/or complex situations and actions, internal and external to the organization.
  • Thorough knowledge of interpreting professional engineering theory, techniques, practices and procedures, organizational structure, and/or extraneous factors or implications.
  • Experience reviewing and approving work often regarding more complex or unique issues.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and five (5) years of progressively responsible experience including three (3) years of supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualification May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
