Description of Work

The person in this position will conduct traffic engineering investigations such as speed zone studies, intersection surveys for traffic signals, develop plans for signing and/or pavement marking needs, traffic analysis using various software programs, prepare cost estimates for traffic signal installation, prepare pavement marking and sign installation plans. Additionally, this person will perform signal warrant analysis studies, travel time studies, and communicate with contractors, general public and other governmental agencies concerning traffic engineering policies.

Additional Expectations:

Must be able to operate computers, accurately read and interpret project plans and inspect contract projects. This person is required to have close visual acuity to perform activities such as preparing and analyzing data and figures, viewing a computer terminal, and visual inspections. This person is subject to hazards including a variety of physical conditions such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, and could be subject to extreme hot and cold conditions. Ability to legally operate a state vehicle is also expected.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range:  NC13 / $48,222 - $84,388

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision
  • Customer service experience related to resolving problems that involve explaining complicated engineering concepts to various customer groups
  • Experience applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems
  • Experience working in a team environment to complete assignments
  • Demonstrated ability to read, interpret and produce engineering plans and specifications

Minimum Education and Experience

Associate’s degree in an applicable area of engineering technology from an appropriately accredited institution and six (6) years of progressive technician experience; or High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and eight (8) years of progressive technician experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
