Job Description:

Come join the NDOT Traffic Engineering Division!

As a student, you will gain valuable hands-on work experience, while still in college. You will have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects and work tasks. We offer a flexible work schedule while in school with opportunities for more hours during summer and school breaks.


 

Traffic Engineering has two student work study positions available.

Traffic Control Section:
Job Duties:

  • Draft highway junction plans for internal use.
  • Assist with traffic control, pavement marking and signing plans for minor design projects.
  • Assist with traffic signal control plans or other signal related activities.
  • Assist other sections of the Traffic Engineering Division as needed.

Highway Safety Section:
Job Duties:

  • Research latest FHWA (Federal Highway Administration) Proven Safety Countermeasures to determine which safety treatment(s) is/are the best fit for a given location based on targeted crash types and the existing roadway features, classification, traffic volume, etc.
  • Evaluate crash data and crash diagrams at any given location to determine crash patterns.
  • Develop safety project benefit-cost analyses for proposed safety projects in an effort to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities on Nebraska roadways.
  • Develop project evaluations of safety improvements installed on Nebraska roadways as a measure of the project’s effectiveness in reducing targeted crash types and improving overall safety.
  • Assist other sections of the Traffic Engineering Division as needed.


 

Requirements / Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:  Must be a three-fourths time student in good standing majoring in a discipline or field related to the work to be assigned. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two years of higher education in the transportation engineering field.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel or Access.
  • Experience using computer aided drafting such as MicroStation or AutoCAD. 
  • Experience with Synchro or similar traffic software.
  • Experience in highway and street design, traffic control signing, regulations and applications.
  • Experience related to basic data queries, analysis, and summarizing results.

Other:

  • Our internships require a minimum of 10 hours per week when classes are in session with the possibility of working up to 40 hours a week during the summer and scheduled school breaks.
  • Internships may continue until college graduation with many of our interns accepting full-time engineering opportunities with us upon graduation.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.
