Job Description:

The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Professional Engineer to join our Bridge Design team. As a key member of our department, you will be responsible for managing project delivery and serving as the engineer of record for bridge design and repair projects. The ideal candidate will have expertise in bridge design principles, structural analysis, and construction consultation.

Pay range is $40.990 -$60.425 per hour. The pay rate may be commensurate with education and/or experience within fiscal constraints if approved.


 

Job Duties:

  • Manage the design and delivery of bridge projects, ensuring compliance with AASHTO specifications and the NDOT Bridge Design Manual.
  • Serve as the engineer of record for bridge design and repair projects, including those utilizing prestressed concrete girder, steel girder, and reinforced concrete slab designs.
  • Manage the work of consultant engineers, prepare professional service agreements, track schedule and approve invoices.
  • Review bridge plans, calculations, special provisions, shop drawings, quantities, and cost estimates submitted by consultants; advise on required revisions.
  • Coordinate bridge projects with NDOT divisions, FHWA, consultants, municipalities, railroads, utilities, and other stakeholders.
  • Monitor assigned bridge projects from initiation through letting and construction; identify risks and coordinate mitigation strategies.
  • Represent Bridge Design at scoping, progress, plan-in-hand, field reviews, and public meetings.
  • Prepare and coordinate Plans, Specifications, and Estimates (PS&E) submittals and required revisions.
  • Provide construction-phase support including site inspections, field reviews, and coordination with district and construction personnel.
  • Provide leadership, mentoring, and technical guidance to engineers and designers; manage employee performance and development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


 

Requirements / Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline and one year of experience performing professional level engineering assignments. Must possess a Professional Engineer (P.E.) license at the time of application and be licensed by the Nebraska Board of Engineers and Architects at time of employment or be able to obtain such license within 90 days of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field. Master's degree preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in the state of Nebraska.
  • 5+ years of experience in bridge design, project management, and construction consultation.

Other:

  • Valid driver’s license or the ability to provide independent authorized transportation.
  • Must be available for occasional overnight travel.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficiency in Prestressed Concrete Girder, Steel Girder, and Reinforced Concrete Slab design principles.
  • Strong understanding of AASHTO specifications and NDOT Bridge Design Manual.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
