Job Description:
The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) is looking for an Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Technician to join our team and help keep traffic moving safely and efficiently. In this role, you'll install, configure, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair equipment such as traffic signals, battery backup systems, highway cameras, dynamic message signs, variable speed signs, weather sensors, automated gates, traffic counters, and the supporting network infrastructure (wireless, copper, and fiber). JOB DUTIES
- Install, repair, configure, program, and troubleshoot a wide range of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) equipment, including traffic signals, battery backup systems, highway cameras, dynamic message signs, variable speed advisory signs, weather systems, P25 radio user equipment, virtual reference stations, automated gates/beacons, traffic recording sites, and network infrastructure (copper/fiber, wireless components).
- Schedule and conduct preventive maintenance inspections, adjustments, and part replacements to prevent failures or safety issues.
- Locate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair outside plant (OSP) copper and fiber cabling.
- Use advanced tools (GPS cable locators, tone generators, OTDRs) to trace and verify cable paths and resolve communication problems.
- Install and troubleshoot network devices such as switches, media converters, NTP servers, etc.
- Order, receive, and manage stock of supplies, materials, and equipment; prepare purchase orders.
- Track time, materials, and costs for work performed; estimate time, cost, and materials for installations/repairs/modifications.
- Stay current with technological advances in ITS hardware, software, tools, and best practices.
- Train and mentor junior technicians in troubleshooting techniques, network analysis, and electronic repair.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements/Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Two-year vocational degree in electronics, electricity, or other similar technologies and experience in installing, maintaining, and repairing electronic devices/instruments, computer equipment, or related automated/electrical circuitry and hardware. Additional years of experience in the work described may substitute for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

- Valid operator's license.
- Must be able to be placed on-call for after-hours traffic signal response.
- Working in adverse weather conditions may be required.
- Occasional overnight travel for training and regional assistance.
- Capable of performing job duties at elevated heights using appropriate safety equipment.
KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
- Computer Systems: Proficiency in working with computers and software used for equipment operation, configuration, diagnostics, and record-keeping.
- Networking: Understands network types (LAN, WAN, WLAN), with experience in deploying hardware such as routers, switches, and access points. Understanding of networking nomenclature, IP addressing (1Pv4 vs. 1Pv6, public vs. private IPs), subnetting, and key protocols (TCP/IP, HTTP/HTTPS, DNS) with their OSI model layers and ports (e.g., 80, 443). Understanding of DHCP, and troubleshooting commands and tools like ping, traceroute, netstat, Wireshark, and security concepts like firewalls and encryption.
- Electronics and Circuitry: Understanding of electronic components, circuitry, materials, repair methods, and tools of repair work; principles and theory of electricity.
- Troubleshoot and Analysis Tools: Proficiency in theory, operation, and application of troubleshooting and analysis tools is essential for diagnosing issues in ITS and network systems. This includes using a multimeter, Optical TimeDomain Reflectometer (OTDR), packet capture software (Wireshark), Optical Loss Test Set (OLTS), spectrum analyzer, cable tester, and power quality analyzer.
- Preventive Maintenance Procedures: Understands the inspection, adjustment, and replacement techniques to maintain electronic equipment and prevent malfunctions or safety hazards.
- Documentation Practices: Skilled in maintaining accurate records, including hardware setup, modification logs, circuitry schematics, and maintenance/test logs.
- Standards and Regulations: Knowledge of the National Electrical Code, Nebraska Electrical Code, and FCC rules and regulations. Understanding of workplace safety protocols, especially when working with electrical systems, high-voltage equipment, and heavy machinery.
Skills in:
- Design, Installation, and Repair: Ability to design, install, troubleshoot, and repair complex electronic equipment and systems, including wiring and component replacement.
- Technical Troubleshooting: Proficient in identifying and resolving issues in electronic systems, including communication systems and sensors. Skilled in analyzing and interpreting blueprints, construction plans, schematic diagrams, and technical documentation to diagnose problems and ensure system functionality.
Ability to:
- Attention to Detail: Precision in performing maintenance, repairs, and documentation to ensure accuracy and prevent errors in complex systems.
- Manual Dexterity: Physical capability to handle small components, tools, and machinery for installation and repair tasks.
- Problem-Solve: Ability to analyze technical issues, identify root causes, and implement effective solutions under time constraints.
- Adaptability: Capacity to stay updated on technological changes and adapt to new equipment, software, or troubleshooting methods.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, such as operating heavy equipment, climbing towers, or working in outdoor environments for extended periods.
- Communication: Exceptional verbal and written communication to explain technical concepts to end users, document activities, and collaborate with leadership and train junior technicians.
- Teamwork: The capability to work effectively with other technicians, leadership, vendors, and internal and external agency team members.
