POSITION SUMMARY

The Illinois Department of Central Management Services is seeking to hire a Stationary Engineer at the Chicago Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois. Primary duties of this position include installing, maintaining, and repairing the heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) operational systems, repairing and replacing pumps, defective valves, gaskets, pairings, and filters, operating hand and power tools and heavy powerhouse tools to perform routine repairs. Additional duties include making rounds of the buildings' boiler and mechanical rooms at regular intervals, testing and recording water used for consumption, and for generating steam and hydraulic hot water. The ideal candidates in addition to meeting minimum requirements, possesses strong organizational and communication skills, along with effective writing and record keeping experience. POSITION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Under direct supervision of the Facility Manager, receives day-to-day assignments from the Chief Stationary Engineer.
  • Makes rounds of buildings’ boiler and mechanical rooms at regular intervals.
  • Tests and records water used for consumption or for generating steam and hydraulic hot water, chilled water systems, and adds appropriate chemicals for proper maintenance of systems including chilled and hot water loops and cooling towers.
  • Confers with tenant agencies to resolve problems related to building services.
  • Assists other CMS facilities in the Region in the installation, maintenance, and repair of various mechanical systems to ensure proper functioning of systems and equipment.
  • Operates heavy powerhouse equipment and tools.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to the completion of high school.
  • Requires four years’ experience in power plant operation and in firing high-pressure and/or low-pressure stationary boilers.
  • Requires possession of a valid certificate as a Universal Technician under U.S.E.P.A. Section 608 Rules.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATONS

  • Prefers working knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques used in the operation of high-pressure and/or low-pressure coal, gas or oil-fired boilers and their auxiliaries.
  • Prefers three (3) years professional experience following oral and/or written instructions effectively.
  • Prefers three (3) years professional experience operating hand and power tools effectively.
  • Prefers working knowledge of minor electrical, carpentry, and plumbing skilled trades work.
  • Prefers extensive knowledge of performing repairs and maintaining equipment HVAC systems, heating and cooling equipment and machinery.
  • Prefers working knowledge of handling chemicals in the maintenance of systems.
  • Prefers working knowledge of reading and understanding mechanical blueprints/floorplans and technical equipment manuals.
  • Prefers working knowledge of the operation of electrical generating equipment.
  • Prefers working knowledge of keeping written logs of daily operations.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMEMNT

  • Requires completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license and the ability to travel in the performance of duties.
  • Requires possession of a City of Chicago Stationary Engineer License.
  • Requires possession of a valid certificate as a Universal Technician under U.S.E.P.A. Section 608 Rules.
  • Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be requested or required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime. Requires the ability to work shifts, including covering vacation and relief shifts, weekends, and holidays.
  • Requires the ability to lift and move equipment/machinery up to 50 pounds (up to 100 pounds with assistance).
  • Requires the ability to work from ladders, scaffolds, and heights up to 25 feet above ground.
  • Requires the ability to maneuver and work in crawl spaces, work outdoors, and work from rooftops.
  • Requires the ability to use agency technology/equipment (i.e., mobile phone, laptop, etc.) properly in accordance with information security awareness policies and confidentiality guidelines.
