Position Overview - Building/Grounds Laborer

The Department of Military Affairs is looking to hire a Building/Grounds Laborer located at the Camp Lincoln Facility.  Under direct supervision, this position regularly performs a variety of semi-skilled labor or building mechanical work below the journeyman level and may directly assist skilled craftsmen; or operates heavy equipment, as required, in the maintenance of the facility and grounds. The Department of Military Affairs works with the members of the Illinois Air and Army National Guard.  We welcome all interested applicants to apply.

Essential Functions

  • Maintains interior cleanliness of facility.
  • Performs exterior maintenance of facility.
  • Performs routine maintenance of facility.
  • Cares and accounts for janitorial supplies and equipment.
  • Loads and unloads trucks which requires the possession of appropriate valid driver's license when moving the trucks; sets up and takes down tables, chairs, etc.; moves office equipment; carries moderate to heavy items up to 80 lbs.
  • Performs building security duties such as checking for leaks, fires, vagrants, and prowlers. Checks condition and security of facilities windows, doors, gates, and other controlled access points.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of high school.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers one year of maintenance work experience preferably associated with the building/mechanical trades and/or heavy equipment operation.
  • Prefers elementary knowledge of building cleaning methods.
  • Prefers the ability to follow simple oral and written instructions.

Employment Conditions

  • Requires the ability to pass a DoD background investigation and obtain a DoD Common Access Card (CAC) prior to hire or transfer.
  • Requires travelling to other state facilities using state owned vehicle. Requires a valid driver’s license in the appropriate classification as required by law.
  • This position is considered heavy work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(d)). Heavy work involves lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires being on feet for long periods of time; the ability to climb stairs and ladders.
  • Requires being on hands and knees for extended periods of time.
  • Requires the ability to withstand extreme temperature changes.
  • Requires exposure to a variety of chemical cleaning agents.

 

Work Hours:  7 am - 3 pm (1/2 hr lunch) Can vary based on mission requirements
