Science Teacher (Grades 7–12)
Position Purpose
Under the general supervision of the School Principal, to develop students’ skills and competence in scientific inquiry, experimentation, and analysis, as well as an understanding of biological, chemical, and physical principles and their application to real-world phenomena and problem-solving.
Essential Performance Responsibilities
- Develops and administers science curriculum consistent with school goals and objectives and aligned with state and national science standards.
- Promotes a classroom and laboratory environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, hands-on learning, and student inquiry.
- Develops lesson plans and instructional materials for all subject/content areas.
- Teaches knowledge and skills in science, including biology, chemistry, and physics, and promotes critical thinking, experimentation, and scientific reasoning in all related subject areas.
- Designs learning activities and labs to demonstrate the application of scientific concepts to everyday life and problem-solving.
- Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning and progress, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual students’ needs, including students with special needs; conducts individual and small group instruction as needed.
- Maintains and enforces laboratory safety procedures and proper use of scientific equipment and materials.
- Coordinates with other professional staff members, especially co-Science Teacher, to support curriculum alignment and interdisciplinary learning.
- Selects and requisitions appropriate textbooks, laboratory materials, instructional aids, technology, and other supplies, and maintains inventory records.

Performs other related tasks as assigned by the principal.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, including inquiry-based and hands-on instruction, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
- Knowledge of a wide range of scientific subject areas, including biology, chemistry, physics, physical, life, environmental, and general science concepts.
- Ability to design and manage safe and effective laboratory experiences.
- Ability to organize and coordinate work, including lesson planning, lab preparation, and assessment.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
- Ability to engage in self-evaluation regarding performance and professional growth.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
Certification/License:
- State of RI Certification as a Secondary Grades General Science Teacher
Education
- Bachelor’s from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
- Master’s Degree preferred.
Experience
- Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.
