As a Senior Decision Scientist – Quantitative Science on the Global Supply Chain (GSC) Network Optimization team you will serve in a senior applied technical role leading analytical strategy and experimentation that improves product availability in our coffeehouses, inclusive of broader supply chain considerations and execution within our coffeehouses.  You will use advanced statistical modeling, machine learning, and causal inference to diagnose availability drivers, optimize inventory decisions, and ensure that customers can find the right products they want – when and where they expect them.  You will partner with data science, engineering, supply chain and coffeehouse operations teams to build data-driven solutions that improve how we forecast demand, manage and replenish inventory, and measure in-store execution.  The combination of your strategic lens and extensive, hands-on direct application will deliver quantifiable benefits for our network, coffeehouses, customers and bottom line.  

As a senior decision scientist, you will… 

  • Lead analytical workstreams to identify root causes of product unavailability, out-of-stocks, phantom inventory, and replenishment failures
  • Leverage statistical and ML models for demand forecasting, inventory optimization, anomaly detection, and availability risk-scoring
  • Develop causal inference and experimentation frameworks to quantify the impact of operational or assortment changes
  • Champion data quality and operational measurement, including availability KPIs, forecast accuracy, inventory health metrics, and coffeehouse-level execution indicators
  • Influence strategy by presenting findings and recommendations to senior leaders and cross-functional partners
  • Mentor junior analysts and scientists and elevate best practices in modeling, experimentation, and analytics



We’d love to hear from people with:

  • MS+ with concentration in quantitative discipline – Operations Research, Stats, Math, Comp Sci, Engineering, Econ, or similar discipline

  • 3+ years industry experience in data science
  • Experience with forecasting, inventory optimization, and supply chain planning
  • modeling pipeline  
  • Experience building complex data sets from multiple data sources, both internally and externally  
  • Experience root causing complex and ambiguous current state outcomes and trends and tying to specific technical and nontechnical resolutions
  • Strong SQL, database and ETL skills required including cleaning and managing data  
  • Strong competency and expertise in Python, R or some combination  
  • Ability to apply knowledge of multidisciplinary business principles and practices to achieve successful outcomes in cross-functional projects and activities  
  • Ability to educate others on statistical / machine learning methods  
  • Self-starter, attention to details and results orientated, able to work under minimal guidance
  • Proficient in communicating effectively with both technical and nontechnical stakeholders.  
  • Experience with Cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, Databricks, and AI-assisted capabilities preferred
  • Experience with multi-echelon inventory optimization preferred
  • Experience specific to quick service restaurant or retail inventory management beneficial, not required

If you are working in CA, CO, IL, LA, ME, MA, NE, ND or RI, you will accrue vacation up to a maximum of 120 hours (190 in CA) for roles below director and 200 hours (316 in CA) for roles at director or above.  For roles in other states, you will be granted vacation time starting at 120 hours annually for roles below director and 200 hours annually for roles director and above.

The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, and internal equity.  At Starbucks, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at the high end of the range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate.
