General Description

The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating heavy machinery on construction sites. This role includes performing grading, excavation, material movement, and site preparation while ensuring compliance with safety regulations and project specifications. The Heavy Equipment Operator may perform a variety of tasks and transition between different duties as project needs require.


Key Duties

Equipment Operation & Maintenance:

  • Safely operate dozers, excavators, loaders, backhoes, and other heavy equipment.
  • Perform daily safety checks and inspections for leaks, damage, and proper functionality.
  • Responsible for daily maintenance of equipment, including fueling and lubrication.
  • Monitor and adjust engine gauges, control wheels, handles, and pedals to operate machinery efficiently.
  • Keep equipment clean and well-maintained for optimal performance.

Site Work & Project Execution:

  • Level material, move rock or debris, and grade slopes as required.
  • Drive dozers in successive passes to achieve specified grades.
  • Understand and interpret production and quantity requirements to meet project deadlines.
  • Perform incidental duties within other construction crafts as needed.

Safety & Communication:

  • Demonstrate a safety-first mindset at all times.
  • Report any equipment issues or necessary repairs to the supervisor immediately.
  • Communicate professionally with supervisors, teammates, contractors, clients, and vendors.
  • Follow directions from the foreman or superintendent to ensure job accuracy.

Qualification Requirements

Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • 3–5 years of experience as a Heavy Equipment Operator or in a related role.
  • Ability to understand work directions and communicate effectively with supervisors and team members.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Proficiency in operating and maneuvering heavy equipment in various terrain conditions.
  • Strong knowledge of construction site safety procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Physical Demands

  • Frequent standing, bending, stooping, and crouching for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs frequently and up to 150 lbs with assistance.
  • Maintain constant awareness of job site activities and moving equipment.
  • Walk on uneven terrain in varying weather conditions.
  • Safely climb on and off heavy mobile equipment as needed.

Work Environment

  • Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Exposure to high noise levels, grease, dust, and construction debris.
  • Regular work near heavy equipment and moving machinery.
  • Possible exposure to form oil, grease, curing compounds, gasoline, diesel fuel, and asphalt.
