JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Scheduled Weekly Hours: 40

Work Shift: Mon-Fri 8am-4:30pm

Summary of the Job

The Oncology Nurse Navigator (ONN) is a professionally registered nurse with oncology-specific clinical knowledge who offers individualized assistance to patients, families, and caregivers to help overcome healthcare system barriers; uses the nursing process throughout all phases of the cancer continuum. The Oncology Nurse Navigator works in a collaborative fashion with patients, families, and the multidisciplinary team to ensure every patient receives comprehensive, timely and quality healthcare services.

Minimum Qualifications:

Current LA RN licensure required.  BSN preferred. Minimum of two years of oncology nursing experience. ONN-CG or OCN strongly encouraged within 18 months. Must maintain 12 Oncology specific CEUs per year.

Current BLS certification through any International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) provided courses such as but not limited to: Ochsner Health System, American Heart Association, and American Red Cross.  The ILCOR course must include a manikin check off.

Knowledge base of pathophysiology of cancer, treatment modalities, disease progression and organ systems management. Working knowledge of insurance coverage and procedures as well as community resources. Demonstrated ability in planning, organizing, leadership, and communication skills. Demonstrated Customer Service Skills. Typing and computer skills required.

Strong organizational, leadership, communication and critical thinking skills are needed as well as the ability to work in teams, multi-task and prioritize patient needs. Must be able to work autonomously and have a basic working knowledge of insurance coverage and procedures.

Physical Demands:

Must possess good physical health.  Some requirements include but are not limited to standing, sitting or walking for long periods of time.  Lifting at least 50 pounds is required.  

Physical Effort required:        

Constant (67%-100%) handling/feeling, talking, hearing, seeing

Frequently (34%-66%) - lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, crouching, reaching, stooping

Occasionally (1%-33%) climbing (stairs, ladders, etc.)
