About this role

Summary/Objective:

The General Manager supervises operations and management staff. The general manager gives specific direction for each department head. As part of this supervision, a general manager hires, trains, coaches and disciplines lower-level managers, supervisors, and ILA workforce. This employee sets incentives for workers, appraises the efficiency of departments and creates strategic plans for the business based on company goals.  The general manager collaborates with people higher up in the organization and with those he supervises to achieve these goals. Additionally, is responsible for budgeting resources toward supplies, equipment and hiring.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the supervision of subordinate personnel to ensure that all work is accomplished in a consistent manner with organizational requirements and goals.
  • Work with marketing team when establishing contracts.
  • Work with contract team when establishing rates.
  • Work with Port Authority to ensure lease commitments are maintained, and daily operations are worked in a safety and efficient manner.
  • Engage current and future customers regularly to ensure satisfaction and address concerns.
  • Participate in the settlements of on-the-job grievances and labor relations.
  • Implement schedule and policy changes.
  • Ensure that continuous improvement is being made with regards to policies, procedures, goals, and objectives.
  • Ensure that staff members comply with administrative policies and procedures, safety rules, union contracts, and government regulations.
  • Promote safe work activities by conducting safety audits, attending company safety meetings, and meeting with individual staff members.
  • Monitor spending to ensure that expenses are consistent with approved budgets.
  • Analyze expenditures and other financial information in order to develop plans, policies, and budgets for increasing profits and improving services.
  • Set operations policies and standards, including determination of safety procedures.
  • All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 7-10 years of container operations management experience in senior roles.
  • Thorough knowledge of container terminal operations and regulations.
  • Must have valid DL.
  • Proven leadership skills.
  • Experience with computerized operating systems.
  • Knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes and regulations.
  • Knowledge and understanding of cargo stowage and stability are strongly desired. 
  • Knowledge of local unions dispatching rules, work rules, and contracts.
  • Required to observe all safety and health requirements for container terminal environment.
  • TWIC card required.

Work environment:

  • Required job duties are normally performed in a climate-controlled office environment.
  • Exposure to computer screens.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • The position may be required to travel
