General Purpose of Job:
The Patient Care Technician assists nurses in providing basic care. Under the supervision of a RN the Patient Care Technician performs specific procedures as trained.
Essential Duties:
This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Associates may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.
- Provides basic and technical care to patients as directed by an RN.
- Performs specific patient procedures and treatments per Hospital guidelines and policies as well as intradepartmental guidelines and policies.
- Documents care given and patient response in chart as indicated
- Cleans and maintains equipment and environment.
- Demonstrates knowledge and use of appropriate equipment and supplies to provide quality patient care and a safe patient environment in the Medical/GYN Clinic and Infusion area.
- Communicates significant information and changes in patient condition to the RN.
- Actively participates as a team members.
- Constructively addresses patient and team issues to ensure quality patient care and a collaborative work environment.
- Assumes mentor role for new PCTs and MSU students.
- Assumes responsibility for ongoing education and completion of mandatory requirements.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Serves as a role model for consistent demonstration of Sparrow Health System's Customer Service Behavioral Standards of Performance, respecting the Privacy and Confidentiality of those we serve.
- Demonstrates knowledge and respects patient, service provider, organizational confidentiality and HIPPA Security procedures and protocols as defined under the HIPPA Privacy and Security Procedures.
- Follows established HIPPA privacy procedures when using and/or disclosing protected health information.
- Maintains, and protects patient's rights under the HIPPA Privacy Standards.
Job Requirements
| General Requirements | • BCLS. |
| Work Experience | • Two years’ experience in outpatient physician practice or equivalent setting required. • Preferred - Acute Care Nursing experience |
| Education | • High school diploma, G.E.D. or successful completion of 12 grades combined with continued enrollment in early college program. • Successful completion of Acute Care Nursing Assistant Program OR certified nurse assistant program OR documented completion of Fundamentals of Nursing as a current student in a nursing program OR completion of a medical assistant program OR completion of an EMT or Paramedic program. |
| Specialized Knowledge and Skills | • Successful demonstration of patient lifting, moving and transporting techniques. • Interpersonal skills to effectively and appropriately communicate with patients, families, physicians and other Hospital associates. |
