General Purpose of Job:


Under the direction of the registered nurse, provides nursing care in accordance with departmental and hospital policies and procedures.


Essential Duties:


This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis.  Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.



  • Under the direction and supervision of the RN, assists with the basic nursing care such as patient hygiene, feeding, positioning, turning and transferring

  • Identifies patient care problems and communicates them to RN.

  • Under the direct supervision of the RN, and in accordance with hospital polices, performs specific procedures such as vital signs, incentive spirometry and obtaining daily weights

  • Timely answers patient's call and emergency lights.

  • Rounds on assigned patients every hour and anticipates their needs.

  • Appropriately delivers or obtains items from other departments

  • Cleans and maintains equipment, supplies, and environment

  • Attends meetings and in-services as required.

  • Assists with precepting new PCT's to the unit in conjunction with the RN.

  • Assists with filing and maintaining departmental records/charts

  • Correctly identifies patients per the hospital identification policy prior to performing any procedures and/or labeling specimens.

  • Applies telemetry electrodes as needed.

  • Reports pertinent information to appropriate personnel, and records data accurately and concisely within the electronic record per hospital guidelines for the PCT.

  • Correctly opens sterile packages and sets up and maintains a sterile field. Assists the RN during sterile procedures as needed.

  • Correctly manually ventilates intubated patients. Under the direct supervision of the RN, assists with changing ties and tubes.

  • Performs Accucheck and other point of care blood testing as trained and as needed.

  • Correctly initiates basic life support in the event of patient arrest

  • Correctly removes foley catheter and obtains the specimen for urinalysis.

  • Attends all required safety training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job-related hazards.

  • Assists with dressing changes under the direct supervision of the RN.

  • After training may discontinue a saline lock or IV site as directed by the RN.

  • Follows the hospital exposure control plans/blood borne and airborne pathogens

  • Possesses an understanding of infection prevention and control measures designed to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.

  • Performs all responsibilities/duties required by the PCT position specific to the scope of service.

  • Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.

  • Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team to facilitate the department's/unit's ability to meet its goals and objectives.

  • Attendance is an essential element of this position







Job Requirements





















General Requirements • BLS certification obtained within 60 days of hire date
Work Experience • None
Education • High School education or equivalent required. • Preferred - Certified nursing assistant
