Position Summary

  • Protects the organization's employees, patients, visitors, properties and all items of value on premises from any preventable harm or danger.  Maintains general order of the local environment and intervenes in disturbances in a calm and efficient manner guided by courtesy, established rules and regulations.
  • Detects, corrects, reports, investigates, manages, and mitigates safety and security hazards and violations on hospital campuses and off site properties using appropriate tools, training, and resources.
  • Assists in Incident Command situations, psychiatric patient evaluations and management, duress alarms, conflict situations, and hazardous materials/waste spills.  Responds and assists with all medical emergencies within the scope of the officer's training.

Education

  • High School graduate or equivalent

Licenses and Certification

  • Valid Illinois drivers license
  • Level I (within 90 days)
  • Essentials of Aggression Management (EOAM) certification
  • Taser Certification
  • Level II:
    • Basic certification by International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety
  • Level III:
    • Advanced certification by International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety

Experience and Skills

  • Skills:
    • Basic computer skills.
    • Read and write detailed reports.
    • Able to respond calmly and operate efficiently to emergency and critical confrontations.
    • Professional and courteous when dealing with staff and public of all age groups.
    • Maintain a high level of integrity and honesty in maintaining confidentiality.
  • Experience:
  • Level I:
    • Requires experience with the public in a service environment. Security experience preferred.
    • Within 90 days:
      • FEMA IS- 906: Basic Workplace Security Awareness
      • FEMA IS- 907: Active Shooter: What You Can Do
      • Complete handcuff training and demonstrate use according to CMS guidelines.
      • Requires completion of SIH Security New Hire Orientation Checklist within 90 days.
  • Level II additional experience:
    • Requires minimum of 90 days on the job experience.
    • NIMS - IS-100a
    • NIMS – IS-200a
    • Completion of all elements of the Competency Assessment for Promotion from Level I to II.
  • Level III additional experience:
    • Requires minimum of 180 days on the job experience.
    • NIMS – IS-700b
    • NIMS – IS-800b
    • Completion of all elements of the Competency Assessment for Promotion from Level II to III.

Physical Activities

  • Intermittent hand manipulation required.
  • Intermittent lifting and carrying of 50 lbs and to help restrain or lift a person. Can be modified.
  • Requires sufficient strength and agility to respond to crisis situations and critical confrontations.

Role Specific Responsibilities

LEVEL 1

  • Serves as physical deterrent and visible presence to maintain safety and security.
  • Detects, corrects, reports, investigates, manages, and mitigates safety and security hazards and violations on hospital campuses and off site properties using appropriate tools, training, and resources.
  • Responds quickly to highly stressful critical and emergency response situations.
  • Assists in Incident Command situations, psychiatric patients evaluations and management, duress alarms, conflict situations, and hazardous materials/waste spills.
  • Utilizes reasonable non-deadly force at the minimal amount necessary to establish and maintain control of a subject as related to the level of resistance in accordance with SIH policy and Illinois State Law.
  • Prioritizes calls for service in order of urgency based on safety needs.
  • Confronts, assesses, and detains unauthorized persons as identified.
  • Monitors the premises by patrolling buildings and property on foot or by vehicle to deter criminal activity.
  • Utilizes security monitoring and video surveillance systems to monitor, detect, and respond to security events. 
  • Controls parking and traffic flow; enforces parking regulations.
  • Maintains access routes and accessibility to Emergency Department and other entrances/exits for patients, visitors, and EMS.
  • Escorts personnel to parking lots and hospital buildings as requested.
  • Assists visitors and patients with wayfinding and issue resolution.
  • Provides correctional officers/police officers with forensic education as applicable.
  • Monitors and enforces visitor pass procedures.
  • Monitors radio communications by Switchboard Operator and other Officers to provide assistance as needed.  
  • Secures and/or unlocks offices and facilities.  
  • Maintains records and accurately prepares incident reports and other documents pertinent to security activities and procedures using security management software.
  • Provides secure courier assistance as required.
  • Assists with helicopter transfers and other patient movement as required. 
  • Operates and maintains onsite patient transport shuttle as assigned.
  • Completes and passes focused training such as aggression management, hazardous materials/waste, access controls, and decontamination.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Level II additional responsibilities

  • Actively investigates thefts and responds to other complaints involving potential criminal misconduct.  
  • Coordinates with applicable law enforcement agencies as appropriate.  
  • Utilizes and evaluates access management software and provides video footage as required.
  • Assists Correctional Officers with forensic patients as requested.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Level III additional duties

  • Serves a resource for Security staff on duty when Security Supervisor or Lead is not present. 
  • Serves as mentor for technical support or guidance at direction of Supervisor or Lead.
  • Coordinates work assignments at direction of Supervisor or Lead.
  • Serves as agent of Security by responding to and mitigating complaints as assigned by Supervisor or Lead.
  • Serves as Safety Officer when Hospital Incident Command is implemented.
  • Documents and logs Security Lean Daily Management metrics on PCIB.
  • Participates in weekly gemba walks.
  • Maintains Advanced certification by International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety
  • Communicates issues to Supervisor or Lead as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Compensation (Commensurate with experience):

$19.02 - $28.53
