The SCMP Business and Technology desks cover the most critical stories shaping the global economy, from China’s macroeconomic shifts and financial markets to the frontline of the global semiconductor war and AI innovation. With teams across Hong Kong, Mainland China, and London, we provide sophisticated insights to a global readership.


Purpose of the Position:

We are seeking a versatile and authoritative News Editor to lead a high-performing team of reporters. Whether focusing on Banking & Finance or Emerging Technology, the successful candidate will provide strategic editorial direction, drive exclusive enterprise stories, and ensure our coverage remains the definitive voice in the region. You will blend deep subject-matter expertise with the leadership skills necessary to mentor a young, ambitious newsroom.


In this role, you will: 

  • Provide guidance on specialized coverage, focusing on either Finance & Banking (M&As, IPOs) or Technology (AI, Semiconductors, Supply Chains).
  • Work closely with a team of reporters, instilling a high-performance culture and ensuring content meets the highest standards of objective journalism.
  • Drive newsroom initiatives and manage daily operations, including talent assessment, performance management, and recruitment.
  • Assign and edit high-impact stories, ensuring professional news judgment and that all content aligns with SCMP’s strategic goals.
  • Represent SCMP at seminars and industry events to promote the company's image and expertise in key coverage areas.


Skills and Experience that will lead to success:

  • Degree holder with 10–15 years of journalistic experience, including management roles in a major newsroom.
  • Deep expertise in either the financial sector (policy, markets) or the technology ecosystem (AI, hardware, geopolitics).
  • Analytical mindset with a proven track record of delivering exclusives and deep-dive analysis.
  • Professional fluency in English is required; proficiency in Mandarin or Cantonese is highly preferred for sourcing and document review.
  • Team player capable of working under pressure and mentoring junior staff to reach journalistic excellence.

The work location should be in Hong Kong
