Job Description Summary

The Engineering Supervisor supports the Chief Engineer in overseeing all maintenance and engineering operations at the hotel. This hands-on leadership role is responsible for supervising day-to-day maintenance activities, coordinating preventive maintenance programs, ensuring guest satisfaction, and maintaining all building systems in top condition. You’ll lead by example—coaching team members, responding to service calls, and ensuring the property remains safe, efficient, and compliant with Sonesta and local standards.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise daily operations of the Engineering Department under the direction of the Chief Engineer.

  • Assign, review, and perform maintenance and repair tasks on HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and mechanical systems.

  • Conduct regular property inspections to ensure the highest standards of safety, cleanliness, and functionality.

  • Support and execute preventive maintenance programs to reduce downtime and extend equipment life.

  • Respond promptly and professionally to guest requests and service calls.

  • Ensure all maintenance activities are performed in compliance with Sonesta brand standards, safety protocols, and regulatory requirements.

  • Train, motivate, and develop engineering team members to deliver consistent, high-quality results.

  • Maintain accurate maintenance logs, inventory, and records.

  • Assist with capital projects, renovations, and energy management initiatives.

  • Support emergency response procedures and ensure life safety systems are operational at all times.

  • Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical or trade school certification preferred.

  • Minimum of 3 years of building or hotel engineering experience, with at least 1 year in a supervisory or lead role.

  • Strong working knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems.

  • Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.

  • Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMEMTS:

  • Ability to push, pull, grasp, lift or carry supplies, equipment or tools weighting up to 75 lbs. occasionally
  • Frequently standing up and moving about the facility
  • Frequently handling objects and equipment to maintain the facility
  • Frequently bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing and crawling
  • Ability to talk on the radio to receive and place calls to fulfill requests
  • Ability to focus attention on details, speed and accuracy.
  • Reading and writing abilities are utilized in order to document or record all tasks completed, to order supplies, to receive their instructions for the day and/or to read equipment repair manuals.
  • Must be able to work in a fast paced and customer service-orientated environment; to perform duties under pressure and meet deadlines in a timely manner and work overtime when needed.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Understand and operate basic electrical and plumbing
  • Painting and dry wall
  • Ability to prioritize and organize work assignments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English with guests, management and colleagues.
  • Refrigeration and Air Conditioning/HVAC experience a plus.
  • Must have open availability including days, nights, weekends and holidays.
