Job Description

At Smiths Detection, we make the world a safer place developing advanced technologies that detect weapons, explosives, narcotics, and harmful chemicals. We’re now expanding our software testing capability to support our CBRNE (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear & Explosives) product portfolio.

We’re looking for a Junior Software Test Engineer to help ensure our software applications and embedded firmware meet the highest standards of quality and reliability.

We are only considering candidates with up to two years of software testing experience and will not be progressing applicants who exceed this.

Day to day tasks will include:

  • Execute manual and automated tests to verify functionality, usability, and performance.
  • Identify, log, and track software defects — working closely with developers to resolve issues.
  • Set up test environments and automation frameworks.
  • Use Jira, TestRail, Bitbucket, Confluence, and Katalon Studio to manage test cases, documentation, and defects.
  • Perform tests using scripting languages such as Python (e.g., for device simulators).
  • Collaborate in Agile teams and contribute to continuous improvement of testing tools, processes, and methodologies.
  • Support formal test readiness reviews and ensure software meets internal and external quality standards.

Whilst this is a hybrid role, expectations would be office based at least 3 days a week.

Qualifications

About you:

  • UK based, we are unable to provide sponsorship and this role will require you to obtain SC level clearance.
  • 1–2 years’ experience as a Software Test Engineer or QA Engineer
  • Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Knowledge of software testing methodologies, tools, and best practices.
  • Experience creating and executing test plans, cases, and scripts.
  • Familiarity with Agile development and CI/CD environments.
  • Excellent analytical skills, attention to detail, and communication skills.
  • Eligible to obtain UK SC (Security Check) Clearance.

Desirable:

  • Experience testing embedded systems or firmware.
  • Knowledge of Git or other version control systems.
