Responsibilities:
Monitor hot work areas (welding, cutting, grinding) for sparks, heat, or fire hazards
Maintain continuous surveillance during hot work and for the required period after work ends (often 30–60 minutes, or per site rules)
Ensure fire prevention measures are in place, including fire blankets, shields, and removal of combustible materials
Keep firefighting equipment readily available (fire extinguishers, hoses) and know how to use it
Immediately stop work if unsafe conditions or fire risks are observed
Detect and respond to fires early, attempting to extinguish small fires only if safe to do so
Sound the alarm and notify emergency services if a fire cannot be safely controlled
Maintain clear access to exits, fire lanes, and emergency equipment
Report hazards, incidents, or near-misses to supervision or safety personnel
Remain alert and free of distractions (no phone use, sleeping, or leaving the post)
