Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Home Committee, the Director Veterans Service Officer provides advocacy, advice and aid to veterans, their families and dependents in securing veteran entitlements and benefits from state and federal sources. The duties of the job involve informing the public of services rendered and rights of veterans and their dependents and working closely with veteran organizations; reviewing legislation, regulations and precedents; supervises the operations and staff of the department.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
-Conducts interviews, evaluates, advises and assists veterans, their spouses or families in determining appropriate benefit programs they might be eligible for under various state or federal programs. Assists veterans in the application, development and submission of benefit claims and serves as an advocate for the veteran and their families. Advises and aids inquirers on the variety of benefits available to veterans including claims for pensions, compensation, insurance, medial care, rehabilitation and burial grants. Investigates eligibility requirements and assists veterans and dependents apply for federal and state benefits for housing, medical, economic, educational loans or grants, and disability claims. Assists veterans with a wide variety of topics, issues and concerns.
-Prepares and administers the agency budget. Reviews and monitors agency expenditures, monitors and initiates changes to improve the operations of the office. Compiles various statistics and activity summaries required for various local, state or federal reports.
-Supervises department support staff. Assigns work, reviews performance, trains in office duties, hires, disciplines and determines job requirements for the office.
-Performs a variety of public relation and outreach functions to inform veterans of programs, services and benefits available. Establishes a close relationship with local veteran organizations. Attends membership meetings and participates in various veteran events and activities within the community/county. Promotes an awareness of veteran programs and issues through media and civic events, newsletters, speaking engagements, radio talk shows, health fairs or other activities.
-Administers the Soldiers and Sailors fund for Shawano County. Screens veterans for eligibility to use the fund; coordinates payments; holds periodic meetings of the Soldiers and Sailors Committee; and maintains programs records.
-Performs other tasks of a comparable level or type, as required.
-Maintain annual certification through state or federal conference attendance and completing applications for various service organization representation.
Work Requirements:
-Associates Degree in Business Administration, Human Services, Paralegal or related area.
-Minimum of 2 years of active service in the armed forces and honorably discharged.
-Requires a valid driver's license in the State of Wisconsin.
