About this role

Reporting to the Assistant Controller, the Senior Business Accountant is responsible for the accounting and reporting process. Specifically, this role will focus on the Seaspan Ferries Business which is part of the Seaspan Marine Group. The role will include month-end entries, account reconciliations, monitoring of accounts, accruals, analysis of results, financial reporting, and project support. This position supports all aspects of operational finance & accounting within the division. The role will also assist with other divisions within the Seaspan Marine Group of companies as required. 

 

Note: This position qualifies for an optional hybrid work schedule after 90 days of onsite work and onboarding. Employee will be subject to the terms of the Flexible Work Policy Agreement.

What you’ll do

  • Reviews and analyses accounts and results, which includes engaging with business leaders to understand current state and operational requirements, identifying their needs and supporting their financial reporting and accounting requirements.
  • Working with the Finance Business Partners, assisting with support for budgeting, monthly reporting, forecasting and modeling.
  • Prepares and reviews month-end accounting entries including revenue, cost, balance sheet, carbon credits and amortization accruals.
  • Prepares month-end operational reports.
  • Responsible for the creation and accuracy of the balance sheet, income statement, cash flow and associated working papers on monthly basis.
  • Responsible for the trial balance accuracy of certain areas managed by other finance teams such as capital, tax and payrolls, through active coordination, review and issue resolution.
  • Prepares and reviews reconciliations of accounts to sub-ledgers.
  • Provides in depth variance analysis of results compared to budgets, prior periods, trends and year actuals and forecasts.
  • Supports month-end, quarter-end and year-end reporting processes.
  • Provides support to accounting staff and other department managers as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What you’ll bring

  • Professional Designation (CPA, CFA, etc.) is required.
  • A minimum of 5 years in financial reporting, close process, and accounts analysis.
  • Knowledge and experience in Canadian ASPE GAAP and related accounting concepts, practices, processes, and procedures and financial reporting requirements.
  • Strong knowledge in month-end close process.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word/Outlook/PowerPoint/Visio) with strong knowledge of Excel.
  • Strong presentation Skills (internal & external)
  • Adaptability and open to change.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, problem solve and multi-task.
  • Experience collaborating with Operations and Logistics teams.
  • Customer service orientation, self-starter and initiative driven.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships at all levels of the organization.
  • Prioritization and planning abilities, ability to align across functions.
  • Goal and team oriented, open minded, and possesses a high level of integrity.
  • Attention to detail, critical thinking, negotiating, problem solving, and analytical skills.
  • Highly skilled in ERP Business Systems (Oracle preferred).
  • Leadership and communications skills with ability to communicate with others with tact and diplomacy.
  • Good business acumen.

The estimated salary for this position is $97,200 - $118,800. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate’s skillset and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company’s sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
