Position Summary

Seabird Island is committed to safe and inclusive education transportation services. We are seeking a Bus Driver to join our education team, working collaboratively to support the safe transportation of students.


Under the direction of the Principal and/or Vice Principal, the Bus Driver provides culturally informed, safe, and courteous transportation for students attending the Seabird Island School. This role involves vehicle inspections, route adherence, student supervision, and community engagement. The Bus Driver will also engage with families and school staff to support safety and service delivery.



This is a term position with an ending date of June 30th, 2026.


What You'll Do 

Planning & Administration:

  • File a valid Class 2 or better BC driver’s license and annual driver’s abstract.
  • Complete and maintain pre- and post-trip inspection reports.
  • Maintain records in compliance with Band and School policy manuals.


Service Delivery

  • Provide safe, courteous, and timely bus transportation for students, ensuring that weather and driving conditions are taken into consideration each day.
  • Ensure only registered students ride the bus.
  • Comply with all traffic and safety regulations required. This includes maintaining up-to-date knowledge of first aid procedures.
  • Responsible for maintaining safety standards on the bus. This includes boarding and exiting procedures.
  • Carry a communication device on the bus and use it as per protocols when needed.
  • Perform daily safety inspections of the vehicle, including tires, brakes, lights, and safety equipment.
  • Follow established route schedules and ensure students follow boarding and exiting safely procedures.
  • Enforce student bus rules and report infractions to the Principal or Vice Principal.
  • Regulate heating, lighting, and ventilation systems for passenger comfort.
  • Communicate with parents, students, and staff in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Provide transportation support for school-sanctioned field trips and extracurricular activities as scheduled.


Reporting & Evaluation

  •  Document and report vehicle issues or maintenance needs promptly.
  • Ensure daily and weekly cleaning protocols are met, including disinfecting seats, sweeping floors, and garbage disposal daily, and floor mopping, cleaning windows, and exterior power washing weekly
  • Maintain communication device usage logs as per school protocols.


Team & Interdepartmental Collaboration

  •  Participate in school events, training, or meetings as required.
  • Communicate concerns or recommendations through the appropriate chain of authority.
  • Respect line of authority as outlined by the Employer.


Other Duties

  • Additional responsibilities as needed to support the community and uphold our shared values.


Working / Special Conditions

  • Initial and ongoing employment is subject to submission of a clear Criminal Record Review Program Check to ensure the safety and trust of the communities we serve. This check will be conducted every five years.
  • Initial and ongoing commitment to the values and guidelines of Sq'éwqel (Seabird Island Band), including our policies, procedures, standards of practice, and laws, is essential. This commitment supports our collective work, the community, and the responsibilities of this role.
  • Must possess a valid class 2 driver's license and have access to safe and reliable transportation, insured for community-based use, to effectively travel to and from the communities we serve.


What you'll Bring

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Possess A Class 2 BC Driver’s License with air brake endorsement.
  • Must hold a safe driving record for the last 5 years (driver’s abstract to be submitted and no more than 6 demerit points issued in the last 5-year period).
  • Hold or working towards a valid Standard First Aid and CPR Certificate.
  • Proficient interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills.
  • Knowledge of highway and school bus regulations to operate a bus in a safe manner.
  • Able to manage children while getting in and out of the bus.
  • Experience with record keeping systems.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.


Preferred:

  • Knowledge of bus equipment maintenance is considered an asset.
  • Indigenous candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Lived experience as a member of a First Nations community.
  • Ability to respond quickly and professionally to community or colleague needs and inquiries.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience applying culturally safe and trauma-informed practices in counselling settings.
  • Understanding of intergenerational trauma and its impacts on Indigenous peoples and communities.
