About Scriveiner

Scriveiner has established itself as the UK's premier designer and manufacturer of affordable luxury pens since launching in 2019. The brand has achieved bestseller status across Amazon's US and UK marketplaces, earning the trust of hundreds of thousands of customers worldwide. As Scriveiner prepares to expand its product portfolio beyond pens into stationery and gentlemen's accessories, this role becomes pivotal in scaling the business while preserving the brand's commitment to quality and design excellence.

The Role

The Head of Product Development holds complete ownership of Scriveiner's physical product pipeline, steering each item from initial concept through to launch-ready status. This senior leadership position exists to unlock the company's growth potential by establishing a scalable, repeatable product development function that operates independently of founder involvement in day-to-day decisions.

Unlike traditional product management roles focused purely on digital or project coordination, this position demands hands-on involvement in physical product creation—understanding materials, manufacturing processes, cost structures, and the nuances that distinguish a premium product from a commodity. You will serve as the bridge between creative vision and commercial reality, ensuring every product launched carries Scriveiner's signature blend of accessible luxury.

Key Interfaces
  • Head of Amazon – for marketplace launch execution and commercial strategy
  • Head of Shopify/DTC – for direct-to-consumer channel coordination
  • Head of Operations & Supply Chain – for manufacturing feasibility and logistics
  • Head of Brand & Storytelling – for product positioning and narrative alignment

Core Responsibilities1. Product Strategy & Roadmap

Chart the strategic direction of Scriveiner's product portfolio over a 12–24 month horizon. This involves identifying which categories to enter, determining the optimal sequencing of launches, and balancing ambitious growth targets against realistic execution capacity.

  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive product roadmap spanning pens, stationery, and gentlemen's accessories
  • Establish clear prioritisation criteria that weigh market opportunity, brand alignment, and resource constraints
  • Conduct ongoing market analysis and competitor monitoring to identify whitespace opportunities
  • Make decisive calls on which concepts to advance, delay, or terminate based on strategic fit and commercial viability
  • Communicate roadmap rationale and updates to leadership and cross-functional stakeholders
2. End-to-End Product Development

Orchestrate every phase of bringing a product from concept to launch readiness. This encompasses research, design, prototyping, iteration, and final specification—ensuring each product meets Scriveiner's exacting standards before handoff.

  • Conduct user research through interviews, surveys, and market testing to validate product hypotheses
  • Translate customer insights and market opportunities into detailed design briefs
  • Oversee the sampling and iteration process, working closely with suppliers to refine prototypes
  • Define cost structures and margin envelopes that support commercial success
  • Implement and maintain a disciplined stage-gate process with clear milestones and decision points
  • Document product specifications, including functionality, materials, dimensions, and quality requirements
3. Quality, Design & Standards

Serve as the guardian of Scriveiner's product quality and design integrity. Establish the standards that define the brand's products and ensure consistency regardless of category, supplier, or price tier.

  • Codify Scriveiner's design language and quality benchmarks into documented standards
  • Act as first-line quality authority, conducting thorough reviews before founder approval
  • Collaborate with Operations to ensure designs can be manufactured at scale without compromising quality
  • Develop quality control checkpoints throughout the development process
  • Monitor industry trends in materials, finishes, and manufacturing techniques to maintain competitive advantage
4. Cross-Functional Collaboration & Handoff

Partner effectively with Amazon and Shopify channel teams to deliver products that are genuinely ready for commercial success. The quality of handoff directly impacts launch outcomes.

  • Prepare comprehensive handoff documentation covering product rationale, target customer, and use cases
  • Provide detailed cost and margin assumptions to inform pricing strategies
  • Highlight key quality considerations and potential customer concerns
  • Support channel teams during launch planning with product expertise and training
  • Coordinate with Brand & Storytelling on product positioning and marketing narratives
5. Continuous Improvement & Learning

Build a culture of continuous improvement within product development. Every launch should inform the next, driving ongoing refinement of processes, standards, and outcomes.

  • Conduct structured post-launch reviews analysing quality metrics, return rates, and customer feedback
  • Feed learnings back into product development standards and processes
  • Track and improve development velocity without sacrificing quality
  • Identify recurring issues and implement systemic solutions
  • Benchmark against industry best practices and emerging methodologies
What This Role Does Not Include

Clarity on boundaries ensures focus. The following responsibilities sit with other team members:

  • Amazon ranking optimisation, PPC campaigns, or marketplace pricing tactics
  • Shopify merchandising, email marketing, or promotional calendars
  • Day-to-day supplier relationship management (though collaboration and input expected)
  • Post-launch inventory planning and fulfilment logistics

Experience & Background
  • Minimum 7–10 years of progressive experience in product development or product management
  • Proven track record of taking physical consumer products from concept through commercial launch
  • Senior-level experience in consumer goods, premium lifestyle products, or luxury accessories
  • Demonstrated history of working with overseas manufacturing partners (China experience strongly preferred)
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Product Design, Engineering, or related discipline; MBA or Master's degree advantageous
Knowledge & Expertise
  • Deep understanding of product lifecycle management from ideation to sunset
  • Strong commercial acumen including cost modelling, margin analysis, and pricing strategy
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes, materials, and quality standards for physical goods
  • Knowledge of e-commerce dynamics and what makes products succeed on Amazon and DTC channels
  • Understanding of design principles and ability to evaluate aesthetic and functional trade-offs
Skills & Competencies

Strategic Thinking: Ability to see the big picture while remaining grounded in execution realities. You can develop long-term roadmaps that account for market dynamics, resource constraints, and brand positioning.

Design Judgement: An eye for what distinguishes premium products from ordinary ones. You understand how materials, proportions, finishes, and details combine to create perceived value.

Decision-Making: Comfortable making calls with incomplete information. You can evaluate trade-offs between cost, quality, timeline, and scope, then commit to a direction.

Communication: Clarity in written and verbal communication across diverse audiences—from founders to suppliers to channel teams. You can translate technical details into business implications and vice versa.

Data Analysis: Ability to interpret market data, customer feedback, and performance metrics to inform product decisions. You make evidence-based recommendations while recognising the limits of available data.

Customer Empathy: Genuine understanding of customer needs, motivations, and pain points. You can anticipate how customers will perceive and use products, whether as self-purchases or gifts.

Problem-Solving: Resourcefulness in navigating obstacles—whether supplier challenges, design limitations, or timeline pressures. You find creative solutions without compromising standards.

Tools & Software

Proficiency or willingness to develop expertise in the following tools:

Product & Project Management: Asana, Monday.com, or Jira for roadmap management and task tracking; Notion or Confluence for documentation and knowledge management

Product Lifecycle Management (PLM): Arena PLM, Teamcenter, or similar systems for managing product data, BOMs, and revision control

Design & Visualisation: Basic familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite (particularly Illustrator and Photoshop) for reviewing design assets; understanding of CAD outputs (SolidWorks, Fusion 360) for technical specification review

Analytics & Research: Google Analytics, Helium 10, or Jungle Scout for market and competitor analysis; survey tools such as Typeform or SurveyMonkey for customer research

Collaboration & Communication: Slack, Microsoft Teams, or similar for cross-functional coordination; Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 for documentation and presentations

Financial Modelling: Advanced Excel or Google Sheets for cost modelling, margin analysis, and scenario planning

Personal Attributes

Decisive & Accountable: You take ownership of outcomes, make clear recommendations, and stand behind your decisions. When things don't go as planned, you address issues directly rather than deflecting.

Detail-Oriented Without Losing Sight of Strategy: You sweat the small stuff that customers notice—the weight of a pen, the click of a cap, the colour of packaging—while maintaining perspective on broader business objectives.

Comfortable With Ambiguity: Early-stage product work rarely offers perfect information. You thrive in environments where you must make progress despite uncertainty.

High Standards, Pragmatically Applied: You understand the difference between 'good enough' and 'not good enough,' and you know when perfection serves the brand versus when it creates unnecessary delays.

Collaborative But Not Consensus-Dependent: You value input from colleagues and partners but don't require universal agreement to move forward. You can advocate for your position while remaining open to being convinced otherwise.

Intellectually Curious: You stay current on industry trends, competitor moves, and emerging opportunities. You bring ideas to the table rather than waiting for direction.

Performance Bonus

We do not believe in rewarding presence—we reward results. Our annual performance bonus is tied directly to your individual contributions and achievements throughout the year.

Time Off

We believe that time away is essential to doing your best work. You will receive 15 days of annual leave, accrued monthly.

Scriveiner Welcome Gift

Every new team member receives a curated selection of Scriveiner pens as a welcome gift.

This is not merely a gesture—it is an invitation. We want you to experience firsthand the products you will help shape.

Founder Access

In a larger company, you might spend years waiting for a seat at the table. At Scriveiner, you report directly to the founders. Your ideas will be heard. Your recommendations will be acted upon. Your influence will be felt from day one.
