Scriveiner has established itself as the UK's premier designer and manufacturer of affordable luxury pens since launching in 2019. The brand has achieved bestseller status across Amazon's US and UK marketplaces, earning the trust of hundreds of thousands of customers worldwide. As Scriveiner prepares to expand its product portfolio beyond pens into stationery and gentlemen's accessories, this role becomes pivotal in scaling the business while preserving the brand's commitment to quality and design excellence.
The RoleThe Head of Product Development holds complete ownership of Scriveiner's physical product pipeline, steering each item from initial concept through to launch-ready status. This senior leadership position exists to unlock the company's growth potential by establishing a scalable, repeatable product development function that operates independently of founder involvement in day-to-day decisions.
Unlike traditional product management roles focused purely on digital or project coordination, this position demands hands-on involvement in physical product creation—understanding materials, manufacturing processes, cost structures, and the nuances that distinguish a premium product from a commodity. You will serve as the bridge between creative vision and commercial reality, ensuring every product launched carries Scriveiner's signature blend of accessible luxury.
Key InterfacesChart the strategic direction of Scriveiner's product portfolio over a 12–24 month horizon. This involves identifying which categories to enter, determining the optimal sequencing of launches, and balancing ambitious growth targets against realistic execution capacity.
Orchestrate every phase of bringing a product from concept to launch readiness. This encompasses research, design, prototyping, iteration, and final specification—ensuring each product meets Scriveiner's exacting standards before handoff.
Serve as the guardian of Scriveiner's product quality and design integrity. Establish the standards that define the brand's products and ensure consistency regardless of category, supplier, or price tier.
Partner effectively with Amazon and Shopify channel teams to deliver products that are genuinely ready for commercial success. The quality of handoff directly impacts launch outcomes.
Build a culture of continuous improvement within product development. Every launch should inform the next, driving ongoing refinement of processes, standards, and outcomes.
Clarity on boundaries ensures focus. The following responsibilities sit with other team members:
Strategic Thinking: Ability to see the big picture while remaining grounded in execution realities. You can develop long-term roadmaps that account for market dynamics, resource constraints, and brand positioning.
Design Judgement: An eye for what distinguishes premium products from ordinary ones. You understand how materials, proportions, finishes, and details combine to create perceived value.
Decision-Making: Comfortable making calls with incomplete information. You can evaluate trade-offs between cost, quality, timeline, and scope, then commit to a direction.
Communication: Clarity in written and verbal communication across diverse audiences—from founders to suppliers to channel teams. You can translate technical details into business implications and vice versa.
Data Analysis: Ability to interpret market data, customer feedback, and performance metrics to inform product decisions. You make evidence-based recommendations while recognising the limits of available data.
Customer Empathy: Genuine understanding of customer needs, motivations, and pain points. You can anticipate how customers will perceive and use products, whether as self-purchases or gifts.
Problem-Solving: Resourcefulness in navigating obstacles—whether supplier challenges, design limitations, or timeline pressures. You find creative solutions without compromising standards.
Proficiency or willingness to develop expertise in the following tools:
Product & Project Management: Asana, Monday.com, or Jira for roadmap management and task tracking; Notion or Confluence for documentation and knowledge management
Product Lifecycle Management (PLM): Arena PLM, Teamcenter, or similar systems for managing product data, BOMs, and revision control
Design & Visualisation: Basic familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite (particularly Illustrator and Photoshop) for reviewing design assets; understanding of CAD outputs (SolidWorks, Fusion 360) for technical specification review
Analytics & Research: Google Analytics, Helium 10, or Jungle Scout for market and competitor analysis; survey tools such as Typeform or SurveyMonkey for customer research
Collaboration & Communication: Slack, Microsoft Teams, or similar for cross-functional coordination; Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 for documentation and presentations
Financial Modelling: Advanced Excel or Google Sheets for cost modelling, margin analysis, and scenario planning
Decisive & Accountable: You take ownership of outcomes, make clear recommendations, and stand behind your decisions. When things don't go as planned, you address issues directly rather than deflecting.
Detail-Oriented Without Losing Sight of Strategy: You sweat the small stuff that customers notice—the weight of a pen, the click of a cap, the colour of packaging—while maintaining perspective on broader business objectives.
Comfortable With Ambiguity: Early-stage product work rarely offers perfect information. You thrive in environments where you must make progress despite uncertainty.
High Standards, Pragmatically Applied: You understand the difference between 'good enough' and 'not good enough,' and you know when perfection serves the brand versus when it creates unnecessary delays.
Collaborative But Not Consensus-Dependent: You value input from colleagues and partners but don't require universal agreement to move forward. You can advocate for your position while remaining open to being convinced otherwise.
Intellectually Curious: You stay current on industry trends, competitor moves, and emerging opportunities. You bring ideas to the table rather than waiting for direction.
