About this role

Science Systems and Applications, Inc (SSAI) seeks a motivated and outgoing software engineer to support mission related work at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. This position is designed for an experienced software engineer to support hardware & software sustaining engineering for the 1.2-meter telescope facility. We are looking for a self-motivated and self-directed individual, with good communication skills, to provide parttime support for the software development and integration of the new star camera, and make improvements to the control system.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide support for software development and integration of the new star camera and improvements to the control system.
  • Provide hardware and software support to funded experiments using the 1.2 m telescope including possibly working some nights to support experimental data collection.
  • Provide updates on problems reported, work performed and status of outstanding work.
  • Maintain, update and document all procedures.

Required Qualifications:

  • MS+ or equivalent experience in engineering, software development, instrument science, or a STEM related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in software development anddata analysis. Advanced proficiency in programming in C,C++, Fortran, Python, Version control with GitHub.
  • Common management tools like Jira, Bitbucket, Git (-Hub, -Lab, -Ea), CVS, Subversion, etc.
  • 5+ years of experience in the use of UNIX or Linux-based computer operating systems.
  • 5+ years of experience working with teams of programmers, analysts and engineers in a team environment, to develop requirements, manage tasks, develop software products, and to incorporate new technologies into software.
  • Knowledge of the 1.2 m telescope facility hardware and software (built in 1974), or familiarity with a similar instrument, and ability to learn the workings of the 1.2 m telescope to determine what needs to be fixed when/if the telescope stops working.
  • Ability to maintain and modify the legacy software written in C.
  • A basic understanding of software for satellite tracking and star calibrations is also required.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Significant experience in a physical science, math, or computer science fields.
  • Experience in support of new instrumentation development and testing, calibration and validation.
  • Practical experience with object-oriented programming, AI/ML, GUI design, database integration, hardware drivers, networking.
  • Familiarity with remote sensing and aerospace work environment.
  • Familiarity with satellite laser ranging, telescopes and cameras.

Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and use hands to touch, handle or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee frequently is required to talk and hear and occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
