Position Title: Safety Coordinator


 The Safety Coordinator supports the Health & Safety Manager and department in maintaining a safe, compliant, and health-conscious workplace within a bakery manufacturing environment. This role provides technical, administrative, and field support for health and safety programs, regulatory compliance, incident management, and employee health monitoring. The Safety Coordinator works closely with internal teams and external partners to promote a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with OSHA and other applicable regulations.

This position may require working all shifts, variable schedules, weekends, and/or holidays.

Tasks:

  • Assist the Health & Safety Manager and Health & Safety Department in providing technical and administrative support to internal and external customers.
  • Coordinate and support health and safety activities across the facility, including collaboration with operations, maintenance, sanitation, food safety, quality assurance (QA), HR, engineering, and contractors.
  • Conduct routine field observations, hazard assessments, and internal audits to identify health and safety risks, including machine guarding deficiencies, and recommend corrective improvements.
  • Actively evaluate machine guarding and safeguarding controls to identify gaps, support corrective actions, and promote continuous improvement.
  • Develop, review, revise, and control safety-related documentation, including procedures, instructions, forms, and records.
  • Assist with the review, development, implementation, and periodic evaluation of the Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) program, including LOTO procedures/instructions, training documentation, and compliance verification.
  • Participate in field verification of LOTO procedures to ensure accuracy, effectiveness, and alignment with actual machine conditions.
  • Maintain accurate electronic and physical records and databases required for regulatory compliance (e.g., OSHA logs, training records, medical surveillance records, audit findings).
  • Perform duties related to workers’ compensation claims management, including documentation, communication with providers and insurers, and tracking restricted/modified duty.
  • Actively participate in incident investigations, root cause analysis, and follow-up corrective actions.
  • Support emergency response activities, drills, and preparedness efforts, including assisting in emergency medical situations as needed.
  • Assist with implementation and tracking of corrective actions resulting from audits, inspections, incidents, and near-miss reports.
  • Conduct or assist with industrial hygiene-related programs, including respiratory protection fit testing and occupational hearing conservation testing.
  • Support safety and health training initiatives, including scheduling, facilitation support, documentation, and recordkeeping.
  • Participate in new equipment evaluations, installations, and pre-operational readiness reviews to ensure equipment is safe, properly safeguarded, and ready for full production.
  • Engage regularly with employees through floor presence, safety conversations, and participation in Joint Safety Council and Safety Council meetings.
  • Collaborate with Food Safety and Quality Assurance teams to ensure health and safety requirements align with food safety and quality standards.
  • Communicate safety and health information clearly and professionally to employees and management at all organizational levels.

 

Physical and Work Environment Requirements:

  • Ability to work all three shifts as business demands.
  • Ability to walk, stand, and move throughout a production facility for extended periods.
  • Ability to occasionally lift 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including hearing protection and respiratory protection as needed.
  • Work is performed in both office and production environments, including exposure to noise, temperature variations, and food production processes.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong skills in technical writing, documentation control, and recordkeeping for safety and health programs.
  • Current EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) certification and/or demonstrated emergency response experience strongly preferred.
  • Ability to interpret scientific and technical data.
  • Ability to independently establish, maintain, and use mathematical or analytical databases.
  • Ability to maintain confidential records and conduct sensitive conversations with discretion.
  • Maintain professionalism and discretion when handling sensitive or confidential information.
  • Demonstrate flexibility to support operations, emergency response, and safety initiatives as business needs require.
  • Actively support and promote the company’s safety culture, food safety standards, and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Maintain required certifications, training, and competencies as directed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support health and safety objectives.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with employees and management at all organizational levels.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams.
  • Experience using SharePoint and other electronic document management or information systems.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of a team.
  • Basic understanding of OSHA regulations applicable to general industry manufacturing environments.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED required, associate degree or coursework in occupational safety, industrial hygiene, health sciences, or a related field preferred.
  • One to three years of experience in safety, health, HR, or manufacturing support role preferred.
  • Experience in a manufacturing or food production environment is a plus.
