This position is responsible for the operations of the Rail Control Center and the Light Rail System. This is a safety sensitive position subject to the rules of the RTD Drug and Alcohol Policy.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:    

  • Ensures rail service is safely managed and sustained through the use of the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) control system, computer-based dispatching, radio and CCTV systems, and PA/variable message signs.
  • Evaluates unusual conditions and situations and determines when to utilize SCADA to remove or restore overhead power and set up alternate routes. Coordinates with Bus Operations to establish bus bridges and reschedules service as needed.
  • Advises appropriate departments of disruptions in service due to accidents, incidents, and/or adverse weather conditions.
  • Coordinates with Field Supervisors, Train Operators, vehicle Maintainers and Maintenance of Way in service recovery.
  • Maintains a daily summary of train operations, reports, and records events impacting operations in respective databases and ReadyOp notification system.  Controls interlocking, traction power and other system elements.
  • Participates in the training of new Controllers, including refresher and recertification training.
  • Develops and implements delay management strategies, such as single-track operations, turning trains, shuttle service and service recovery techniques as required.
  • Provides excellent customer service to all employees, customers, government agency representatives, and all others during the course of performing one’s duties.
  • Promotes a culture of safety through awareness, continuous improvements, and adhering to safety guidelines and procedures.
  • Performs all other job-related duties as assigned.
     

Qualifications:    

  • A minimum of two years of experience as a Train Operator, Train Engineer or Rail Dispatcher or one year as a full time Train Operator, Train Engineer or Rail Dispatcher and one year as a  Supervisor in rail transit operations.
  • Light Rail experience and supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Able  to work unusual hours, weekends and holidays.
  • Must have  a valid Colorado driver's license for a minimum of 2 years or ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire. Must have an acceptable motor vehicle report with no DWI, DUI or Wreckless Driving within the past 5 years.
  • Ability to obtain a  Light Rail Train Operator Certification.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Light Rail Controller Certification.
  • For internal applicants, must have acceptable performance within  the past twenty-four months.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to use sound judgment.
  • Ability to manage time and workload effectively which includes planning, organizing, and prioritizing with attention to details.
  • Ability to maintain complete and accurate records.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock; explosives and risk of radiation. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
