
2026 Summer Intern - Synthetic Molecule Pharmaceutics
Department Summary
As part of the Genentech Research and Early Development (gRED) organization, the Synthetic Molecule Pharmaceutics department helps Genentech’s next generation of therapeutics transition from pre-clinical research into clinical development. Our team specializes in synthetic molecules and novel modalities (e.g., nucleic acids, peptides, conjugates) that are given to patients via parenteral routes of administration (e.g., intravenous, subcutaneous, intrathecal, intravitreal). We develop formulations, innovative drug delivery approaches, and manufacturing processes that help bring these novel therapeutics to patients across therapeutic areas.
This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.
The Opportunity
We are seeking a collaborative, curious, and motivated intern to support parenteral formulation development and drug delivery in the Synthetic Molecule Pharmaceutics group at Genentech. In this role, you will contribute to our research and development efforts for novel oligonucleotide drug products.
The primary responsibilities for this role include:
Independently prepare oligonucleotide formulations with different compositions.
Independently analyze oligonucleotide formulations with a variety of different analytical techniques to assess physicochemical properties and structure.
Review and process experimental data, identify data trends and takeaways, and propose hypothesis-driven follow-up experiments.
Conduct literature research to interpret results.
Present research findings and technical recommendations to technical teams within the Synthetic Molecule Pharmaceutics group.
Program Highlights
Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.
Program start dates are in May/June 2026.
A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.
Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

Who You Are
Required Education:
You meet one of the following criteria:
Must be pursuing a Bachelor's Degree (enrolled student).
Must have attained a Bachelor's Degree (recent graduates not currently enrolled in a grad program).
Must be pursuing a Master's Degree (enrolled student).
Must have attained a Master's Degree.
Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student).
Required Majors: Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Required Skills:
Foundational knowledge of pharmaceutical science, particularly solutions and colloids.
Basic understanding of spectroscopic, rheologic, and calorimetric analytical techniques.
Strong experimental and data interpretation skills.
Effective written and verbal communication; ability to collaborate in a team setting.
Enthusiasm for problem-solving and innovation in formulation development.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $26.00-$46.00 hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
