The Direct Support Mentor - Behavioral Health provides direct care and support to individuals receiving behavioral health services in residential settings while serving as a mentor, coach, and role model for Direct Support Professionals (DSPs). This role bridges frontline direct care and supervisory support by reinforcing best practices, modeling professional behavior, supporting onboarding and training of new staff, and promoting consistency in care delivery across all shifts.

The Direct Support Mentor assists individuals served in achieving personal recovery goals, developing daily living skills, and maintaining safety and stability in accordance with each individual’s treatment plan. The role relies on experience, sound judgment, and collaboration.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Direct Support & Recovery-Oriented Care

  • Provides direct support to individuals receiving behavioral health services in residential settings in alignment with individualized treatment plans and recovery goals.
  • Supports individuals in identifying and communicating their needs, preferences, and goals related to wellness, independence, and quality of life.
  • Assists individuals with daily living activities such as eating, resting, dressing, bathing, grooming, toileting, and household routines based on individual needs and abilities.
  • Encourages skill-building, healthy coping strategies, emotional regulation, and positive social interactions.
  • Promotes dignity, respect, autonomy, and person-centered, trauma-informed care at all times.

Mentorship, Coaching & Training Support

  • Serves as a mentor and coach to Direct Support Professionals by modeling appropriate interactions, documentation, boundaries, and professional conduct.
  • Assists with onboarding and training of new Direct Support staff to ensure understanding of expectations, routines, safety procedures, and treatment approaches.
  • Provides real-time guidance and feedback to staff to support consistency and quality of care.
  • Reinforces adherence to policies, procedures, and behavioral health best practices.

Residential & Shift Support

  • Assists with ensuring adequate staff coverage across all shifts in collaboration with the Direct Support Supervisor or Residential Team Leader.
  • May be required to work special schedules, including sleep-over shifts, based on program needs.
  • Supports the maintenance of a clean, safe, and therapeutic residential environment by completing environmental checks, submitting maintenance requests, and monitoring cleanliness of vehicles and common areas.
  • Supports meal preparation, housekeeping tasks, and daily routines within the residence.

Safety, Documentation & Compliance

  • Immediately reports suspected or observed abuse, neglect, or exploitation in accordance with company policy and regulatory requirements.
  • Follows behavioral health crisis prevention, de-escalation, and safety protocols as trained.
  • Accurately completes required documentation related to services provided, incidents, and daily activities.
  • Supports medication administration or self-administration training as allowed by role, certification, and policy.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary communication as appropriate to support continuity of care.

Community Integration & Skill Development

  • Supports individuals in accessing and participating in community activities, social opportunities, and meaningful roles that align with their interests and recovery goals.
  • Encourages development of healthy personal, social, and community living skills.
  • Reinforces learning through consistent support, encouragement, and feedback.

Other Duties

  • The Direct Support Mentor may be required to perform other duties as assigned that are consistent with the role, responsibilities, and service needs.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

This position has no supervisory responsibilities

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience working in a Behavioral Health, residential, or human services setting.
  • Experience supporting individuals with mental health conditions strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor, coach, or support peers in a professional setting.
  • Valid driver’s license, auto insurance, and reliable transportation.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Regularly required to lift 20 lbs.
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 30 lbs.
  • Must be able to pull a minimum of 20 lbs.
  • Must be able to squat, kneel, crawl, crouch, climb, and stoop.
  • Must be able to regularly use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Required to regularly stand and walk.
  • Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in CPR from the floor level requiring to work on hands, knees, bending, standing, and lifting.
  • Exception – Deaf and Hard of Hearing Programs: For these programs only, employees must be fluent in American Sign Language (ASL). The requirement to talk and hear does not apply.
