The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the position as necessary.
- Supervises, monitors and performs all daily wastewater plant operations.
- Supervises the activities of assigned personnel; supervisory duties include scheduling, instructing, assigning and reviewing work, maintaining standards, coordinating activities, allocating personnel, acting on employee problems, and recommending and implementing employee discipline. Offers advice and assistance as needed.
- Provides operations and safety training for plant personnel.
- Inspects equipment and processes to determine efficiency of operations, maintenance requirements, and cleanliness.
- Starts up, shuts down, regulates and adjusts motors, pumps, compressors, grinders, blowers, valves and other apparatus to meet changing operating conditions; adjusts chemical rates as necessary.
- Monitors laboratory test results and initiates corrective action as necessary.
- Monitors process data; enters data and laboratory results into computer system daily; generates related reports.
- Assists in troubleshooting technical and mechanical problems; performs preventive maintenance on equipment; performs and/or assists with equipment repairs as needed.
- Advises and consults with superiors on unusual operating problems or the need for major repairs to equipment.
- Monitors employees’ adherence to safety guidelines.
- Maintains inventory of treatment chemicals and other supplies and materials as needed for daily operations.
- Assists in preparing and administering assigned budget; monitors expenditures and prepares related reports.
- Assists in ensuring plant compliance with policies and procedures, SCDHEC and EPA regulations, and all other applicable laws, regulations, and standards of quality and safety.
- Receives and responds to inquiries, requests for assistance and complaints from customers, agency personnel and the general public in areas of responsibility.
- Serves on call 24 hours per day as scheduled to ensure uninterrupted service for customers.
- Attends conferences, meetings, training, seminars, etc., as necessary to maintain and enhance job knowledge and skills.
- Management may assign additional duties as trained for and qualified to do so related to the work of the position as necessary.
Essential Skills & Experience:
- Must possess a valid state driver’s license.
- Requires an associate degree, vocational technical degree or specialized training that is equivalent to satisfactory completion of two (2) years of college education with emphasis in biology, chemistry, utility management or closely related field.
- Must possess a Position “A” Biological Wastewater Operator license.
- Requires a minimum of three (3) years’ of experience in wastewater treatment.
- Requires team supervision experience or served in a leadership role.
