Schedule: 40 hours/week, Some travel to Connersville and Winchester laboratories. Assistance with Health Fairs as needed.
About the Position
The phlebotomy manager is responsible and accountable for the phlebotomy, secretarial, and processing sections of the laboratory and all phlebotomists across the health system. The manager will establish policies and procedures, create schedules, and maintain competencies. The manager will provide proper staffing, training, and corrective actions
Overview of Responsibilities
Creates an environment where patient and customer satisfaction is exemplary.
Supervises staff in phlebotomy and laboratory secretarial support sections.
Collaborates with lead phlebotomists and other laboratory management for process improvements and facilitates processes and changes throughout department.
Conducts training and in-services for phlebotomy and secretarial support personnel.
Participates in hospital and laboratory quality assurance and improvement initiatives.
Hires, evaluates, and counsels phlebotomists and secretaries as needed.
Ensures that all phlebotomy personnel maintain the certification required for their assigned duties and that all continuing education requirements are completed.
Manages payroll system and resolves all payroll issues for phlebotomy and secretarial sections.
Counsels and documents retraining of employees.
Communicates effectively at least monthly with employees to inform them of changes in hospital and laboratory policies and procedures and passes along other information of interest using formal meetings or other electronic methods.
Evaluates and documents performance and competency semiannually during the first year and annually thereafter by:
a. Performing direct observation of routine test performance including patient preparation, obtaining specimen, specimen handling, processing, and testing.
b. Monitoring recording and reporting of results.
c. Reviewing results, worksheets, quality control records, proficiency results, and preventative maintenance and function checks.
d. Performing direct observation of instrument maintenance and function checks.
e. Assessing test performance through testing previously analyzed specimens, internal blind testing, or external proficiency testing samples.
f. Assessing problem solving skills.
Creates training schedules and training materials for new hires.
Maintains and updates training materials as needed.
Completes competencies for new hires, 6-month assessment, and annually for all phlebotomists, NCTs, and MAs throughout the Reid Health system.
Evaluates processes in all phlebotomy and processing areas to assure compliance with all regulations.
Assists staff during staffing shortages and periods of heavy workload collecting and processing specimens.
Creates monthly, weekly, and holiday schedules and flexes the schedule to maximize productivity.
Assists in handling all complaints regarding service problems in the phlebotomy, processing, and secretarial sections.
Manages operating and capital budgets for phlebotomy and secretarial sections.
Assists with coordination, planning, staffing, and implementation of health and wellness fairs.
Coordinates training for students from schools affiliated with Reid Health Laboratory.
Files occupational injury or illness reports appropriately.
Maintains skills and certification as a phlebotomist.
Accepts and completes other duties as requested by the Director of Laboratory Services, associate pathologists, or Laboratory Medical Director.
May be assigned to work in any lab throughout the Reid Health system.

Education & Experience
Education Required: High school diploma/GED
Education Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in science or business
Experience Required: Five (5) years’ experience as a phlebotomist or medical laboratory technologist
Experience Preferred: Previous managerial experience and phlebotomy certification
