Schedule:  Day Shift. 40 hours weekly 6am to 2:30p Includes weekdays, rotating holidays, every other weekend. Flex schedule as needed. No on call shift

About the Position

Under the technical supervision of the immediate supervisor or director, the MT performs high- and moderate-complexity laboratory procedures in a timely and accurate manner to provide information for diagnosing and combating disease. This role assumes responsibility and accountability for adhering to the established policies and procedures of the hospital and laboratory department, as well as upholding the Mission Statement of the hospital.

Overview of Responsibilities

  • Documents verbal orders for laboratory tests and logs all specimens drawn into the laboratory information system using proper procedures.

  • Processes non-admit specimens by admitting patients in LIS, ordering correct tests, and logging specimens.

  • Performs analyses on the laboratory test directory by following procedure manuals, learning new procedures and demonstrating competence, completing work within turnaround times, analyzing and documenting quality control, monitoring QC trends, and performing preventative maintenance.

  • Enters test results into the computer, verifying accuracy, footnoting abnormal specimen appearances, problem-solving atypical results, calling and documenting critical values, and reviewing Workcenter Activity Reports.

  • Maintains a clean and orderly work area.

  • Helps substitute for the technical supervisor in their absence.

  • Notifies the supervisor when supplies, test kits, and reagents should be ordered.

  • Correlates laboratory methods, procedures, and test results with age-specific population criteria (geriatrics, adults, pediatrics, neonates).

  • Demonstrates troubleshooting capabilities, performing complex problem solving and referring issues when necessary.

  • Uses independent judgment and knowledge to perform assigned tasks.

  • Participates in hospital and departmental quality assessment and improvement (QA & I) activities, monitoring results and helping implement corrective actions.

  • Develops laboratory techniques and procedures, and reviews current procedures as assigned by the technical supervisor.

  • Conducts research in conjunction with the technical supervisor.

  • Assists in testing, evaluating, and selecting new equipment.

  • Helps set up and train operators for new equipment under the technical supervisor/lead.

  • Ensures CAP proficiency results are performed and returned in a timely manner.

  • Coordinates the instruction of students and new employees as directed by the technical supervisor and may oversee the work of non-independent practitioners and trainees.

  • Develops and presents continuing education programs for laboratory staff.

  • Assists in maintaining competencies for laboratory personnel.

  • Core Laboratory Employees: Provides staffing coverage for the Microbiology area as needed, including gram stain reporting, specimen processing, and molecular testing.

  • Microbiology: Performs plate readings and susceptibility testing.

Education & Experience

  • Education Required: Bachelor of Science in biological or physical science, graduate of a Medical Laboratory Science program, or other degree and experience that makes the employee eligible for MT/MLS certification.

  • Education Preferred: Master’s degree in biological, chemical, or physical science.

  • Experience Required: None.

  • Experience Preferred: Completion of a Clinical Laboratory internship.

  • ASCP or AMT or equivalent
