An Emergency Room Charge Nurse (RN) oversees the efficient functioning of the ER, balancing administrative duties with patient care. The Charge Nurse coordinates patient flow, ensuring the right resources are available for patient needs and that priority cases are addressed promptly. This Registered Nurse manages staffing, assigning duties based on skill and patient load while providing guidance and support to the nursing team. An Emergency Room Charge Nurse also consult with doctors and departments to streamline operations and maintain clear communication. Charge nurses manage complex care cases, resolve conflicts, mentor staff, and ensure compliance with healthcare policies, all while fostering a cohesive, efficient team environment that enhances patient care.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (includes, but are not limited to):

  • Act as the primary supervisory figure for ER nursing staff during shifts, ensuring optimal care delivery and efficient patient flow.
  • Assess patient conditions, prioritize patient needs based on severity, and allocate resources effectively to provide timely care.
  • Mentor and support nursing staff, providing guidance, conflict resolution, and performance feedback to maintain a cohesive work team.
  • Serve as a liaison between physicians, nurses, patients, and families, ensuring clear communication about treatment plans and patient status.
  • Ensure readiness to respond swiftly to medical emergencies, coordinating with medical teams for critical interventions.
  • Implement hospital policies, maintain patient safety standards, and ensure compliance with legal, regulatory, and accreditation requirements.
  • Oversee the availability and proper use of medical supplies and equipment, coordinating with procurement and logistics as necessary.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient care practices and departmental efficiency.
  • Ability to work under pressure and adapt to fast-paced environments.
  • Capability to stand, walk, and perform physically demanding tasks for prolonged periods.

 

Qualifications

Before we go any further, we do have some deal-breakers. You must have: 

 

  • Current and valid state RN License
  • Current BLS (AHA) certificate upon hire and maintain current.
  • Current ACLS (AHA) certificate 30 days upon hire and maintain current.
  • Current PALS (AHA) certificate and/or ENPC required 30 days upon hire and maintain current.
  • Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNNC) within 6 months of hire required.
  • Previous supervisory experience, preferred.
  • Minimum of one year as a staff nurse in an acute care hospital setting, E.D. setting preferred.
  • Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) within 2 years of hire, preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred.

 

Facility Specific Requirements (facility may require items listed below):

 

  • In Paramedic Base Station ED, MICN, within 12 months of hire.
  • EDAP Certified Facilities: Completion of emergency pediatric course 1 & 2 within 30 days of hire.
  • Minimum of 4 hours of CEU in Pediatric Training Classes per year ENPC preferred.
  • Non OB facilities: NRP (AHA) certificate within 30 days upon hire and maintain current.
  • Non OB facilities: Advanced or AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring certificate within 30 days upon hire.
