Position Summary:
The MS/US choir teacher is responsible for leading and developing a comprehensive, Christ-centered choral program across the middle and upper schools. This role includes teaching middle and upper school choir classes, helping lead all-school worship services, overseeing the Honor Choir program, and providing musical leadership to PCA’s theatrical productions, student chapel bands, and worship teams.
The MS/US choir teacher is responsible for implementing a robust and cohesive choral program that nurtures musical excellence, spiritual formation, and student leadership.
The MS/US choir teacher plays a vital role in cultivating a culture of worship, excellence, and discipleship through music while building a thriving and unified choir program that reflects Prestonwood Christian Academy’s mission and biblical values.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Instruction & Musical Leadership
Teach middle school (Gr 5-8) and upper school (Gr 9-12) choir classes using developmentally appropriate, high-quality choral instruction.
Assume leadership and direction of the PCA North Honor Choir (grades 4, 5, 6)
Assist with PCA North annual spring musical as music director, working closely with director, scheduling rehearsals, teaching vocal parts, coaching students, providing musical direction for performances, hiring and conducting any live musicians (when applicable)
Assist with planning and leading all-school worship services, chapel music, staff worship times, and other special school-wide services and events.
Provide musical leadership to student worship bands and praise team singers, choosing songs, preparing charts, teaching vocal harmonies, etc.
Select, rehearse, and perform choral repertoire that reflects musical excellence and a biblical worldview.
Develop students’ vocal technique, music literacy, performance skills, and ensemble discipline.
Program Development & Growth
Design and implement a vertically aligned choir program across the lower, middle, and upper school.
Establish clear musical, spiritual, and performance expectations at each grade level.
Lead the growth and development of the Honor Choir program, including auditions, repertoire selection, performances, and competitions.
Identify opportunities for concerts, festivals, community performances, and outreach.
Spiritual Formation & Worship
Integrate biblical truth, worship, and discipleship into rehearsals, performances, and classroom instruction.
Help students understand music as an expression of worship and service to God.
Model Christ-centered leadership and cultivate a positive, encouraging rehearsal culture.
Collaboration & School Leadership
Work closely with Fine Arts staff, campus leadership, and worship teams to align music programming with school events and spiritual life.
Support campus performances, productions, ceremonies, and special events as needed.
Communicate clearly with students, families, and staff regarding schedules, expectations, and performances.
Administration & Operations
Manage choir rosters, auditions, budgets, uniforms, music inventory, and event logistics.
Maintain accurate records and complete required administrative tasks in a timely manner.
Assist with recruitment, retention, and promotion of the choir program.
QualificationsQualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in music, Music Education, Choral Conducting, or a related field.
State issued Teacher’s Certification in area of assignments
Experience teaching or directing choirs at the middle and/or high school level.
Strong choral conducting, vocal pedagogy, and rehearsal management skills.
Strong piano and vocal skills
Ability to work and instruct in a traditional, classical choral style as well as in a contemporary worship style
A personal commitment to Christ and a passion for Christian education.
Prestonwood Baptist Church member preferred.
Physical, Mental Requirements and Work Environment:
Regularly sitting at the computer requiring repetitive finger motion and manual dexterity
Up to several hours of walking and standing during events
Subject to working more than required hours during certain events
Ability to manage multiple coinciding projects
Close visual acuity required for viewing a computer monitor, preparing and analyzing data and figures, transcribing and reading
Hearing – ability to perceive sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction
Talking – expressing ideas by means of the spoken word to convey instructions to students, parents and other workers
Ability to communicate effectively, even in stressful situations
Professional appearance and dress required, as this person is often the “host” of PCA-wide meetings and events
Primarily inside, office environment with the exception of hosting or attending a few outside events throughout the year
Occasional lifting of 5 to 25 pounds
