About this role

Job Summary

The Internal Medicine/ Pulmonology Specialist role combines expertise in internal medicine with a specialized focus on pulmonology, particularly the diagnosis, treatment, and management of lung diseases. The ideal candidate will possess strong knowledge in pulmonary medicine while also being capable of managing a broad range of adult internal medicine conditions. This position is pivotal in providing exceptional care to patients with chronic respiratory disorders, acute pulmonary conditions, and systemic diseases affecting the lungs.

Job Responsibilities 1

Conducts thorough assessments of adult patients with both acute and chronic respiratory and internal medicine conditions. This includes obtaining medical histories, performing physical exams, and ordering diagnostic tests as necessary.

Diagnoses and manages conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, pulmonary fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension, interstitial lung disease, lung cancer, and pneumonia.

Oversees the long-term management of patients with chronic pulmonary diseases, including pharmacological treatments, pulmonary rehabilitation, and lifestyle modifications.

Provides treatment for patients with acute pulmonary conditions such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), asthma exacerbations, respiratory failure, and pneumonia.

Manages patients requiring invasive and non-invasive ventilation support (e.g., CPAP, BiPAP, mechanical ventilation).

Evaluates patients with respiratory conditions for surgical procedures, including assessments of lung function and risk stratification.

Job Responsibilities 2

Participates in the care of critically ill patients with respiratory failure, including those requiring intensive care unit (ICU) management.

Interprets pulmonary function tests (PFTs) to assess the presence and severity of respiratory diseases such as COPD, restrictive lung diseases, and asthma.

Conducts or refers patients for diagnostic sleep studies for conditions like obstructive sleep apnea and other sleep-related breathing disorders.

Analyzes chest X-rays, CT scans, and other imaging to diagnose and monitor lung diseases.

Leads the management of lung cancer, including coordination with oncologists for chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgical options.

Collaborates with a multidisciplinary team, including respiratory therapists, pulmonary nurses, dietitians, oncologists, thoracic surgeons, intensive care specialists and other specialists to provide holistic care to patients.

Additional Responsibilities 3

Performs diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopy procedures, including bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), biopsy, and airway management.

Job Knowledge & Skills

Strong expertise in diagnosing and managing a wide range of pulmonary diseases and internal medicine conditions, including critical care management.

Proficiency in performing and interpreting pulmonary procedures, including bronchoscopy, thoracentesis, and sleep studies.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for working with patients, families, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams.

Proficiency in using diagnostic equipment, EMR systems, and other healthcare technologies.

Ability to contribute to clinical research projects, analyzes data, and apply research findings to clinical practice.

Ability to make quick, informed decisions in high-pressure situations, especially in the management of critically ill patients.

Strong commitment to providing compassionate, patient-focused care and improving patient outcomes.

Job Experience

Minimum of 3-5 years of clinical experience in pulmonary medicine and internal medicine, with proficiency in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Experience in  working with a cardiothoracic surgery team is a major advantage
