What is a Database Administrator?
Teknosys is looking for a proactive Database Administrator (DBA) to manage and safeguard mission-critical database platforms that power our production applications. You will be responsible for ensuring high availability, performance optimization, and rapid recovery during failures or outages.
This role focuses strongly on resilience, failover readiness, backup integrity, and disaster recovery planning, enabling databases to quickly resume operations with minimal downtime and data loss. You will work closely with infrastructure, DevOps, and application teams to maintain reliable and scalable database environments.
What does a Database Administrator do?
Database Installation & Operations
- Install, configure, and maintain relational (MySQL, PostgreSQL) and NoSQL (MongoDB, Cassandra, Redis) databases.
- Manage day-to-day operations for production, staging, and DR environments.
- Ensure database stability, uptime, and operational readiness.
High Availability & Failover Management
- Design and implement high availability architectures using replication, clustering, and automatic failover mechanisms.
- Configure primary-secondary/active-active setups to minimize downtime.
- Ensure databases can quickly recover and resume services during outages or infrastructure failures.
- Regularly test failover and switchover procedures.
Backup, Recovery & Disaster Recovery
- Develop and maintain robust backup and restore strategies using tools like pgBackRest, Percona XtraBackup, or native utilities.
- Define and manage RPO/RTO targets.
- Conduct periodic DR drills and recovery simulations to validate readiness.
- Ensure zero or minimal data loss during recovery events.
Performance Optimization
- Monitor and tune database performance, queries, and workloads.
- Implement indexing, partitioning, and optimization techniques for large datasets.
- Perform capacity planning and resource forecasting.
Monitoring & Incident Response
- Set up proactive monitoring using Zabbix, Nagios, Prometheus, Grafana, or similar tools.
- Respond to database alerts and incidents promptly.
- Lead root cause analysis (RCA) and preventive improvements.
- Maintain SLA compliance for database uptime.
Security & Compliance
- Implement encryption, access control, auditing, and hardening best practices.
- Apply patches and upgrades to address vulnerabilities.
- Ensure compliance with industry and organizational standards.
Collaboration & Automation
- Work closely with development teams on schema design, query tuning, and release planning.
- Automate repetitive DBA tasks using Python, Bash, or PowerShell.
- Support infrastructure automation using Ansible or Terraform.
Documentation
- Maintain SOPs, runbooks, backup procedures, and recovery playbooks.
- Document incident resolutions and best practices.
What are we looking for and what does it require to be Database Administrator?
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, IT, or related field.
- 2–4 years of hands-on experience in database administration.
- Experience managing production databases with HA/DR setups.
- Exposure to incident handling and recovery scenarios.
- MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, Oracle
- MongoDB, Cassandra, Redis (nice to have)
- Replication, clustering, failover setups
- Backup & restore strategies
