Job Description

The purpose of this position is to address legal matters within specific departments and subject matter areas while maintaining close communication with colleagues to ensure an integrated, consistent approach to legal services.

In this role you will:

  1. Lead and manage certain litigation and pre-litigation matters across civil, commercial, employment, regulatory, and class action cases
  2. Assist with development and execution of litigation strategy in alignment with business priorities and risk tolerance 
  3. Select, supervise, and manage outside counsel to ensure high-quality and cost-effective legal representation
  4. Collaborate with internal stakeholders to assess legal risk, develop case strategy, collect evidence, and prepare witnesses
  5. Represent the company in settlement negotiations, mediations, trials, and arbitrations
  6. Oversee responses to subpoenas, government inquiries, and other document requests
  7. Assist with maintenance of case tracking systems, litigation budgets, and legal holds
  8. Advise business units on dispute resolution strategies and help minimize exposure through proactive legal counseling
  9. Support internal investigations and compliance review as needed
  10. Contribute to company policies and procedures related to risk management, dispute resolution, and document retention
  • Requires practical knowledge of technical and/or operational problems
  • Applies operational business practices to improve efficiency
  • Responsible for providing guidance for colleagues with less experience
  • Identifies and solves complex problems
  • Executes objectives with impact on a range of activities within own team
  • Explains difficult or sensitive information to build consensus 

Qualifications

  • JD Degree or equivalent
  • Minimum 5 years experience 
  • Knowledge of general business and contract law
  • Intermediate Microsoft Office skills
  • Prior experience managing outside counsel and litigation budgets
  • Strong negotiation, writing, and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, business-oriented environment
  • High integrity, sound judgement, and strong communication skills

    Over the years, Pilot Travel Centers experienced significant growth and expanded internationally, opening its first travel center in Canada in 2006. In 2007, Pilot bought Marathon Petroleum’s shares and entered a new partnership with CVC Capital Partner in 2008. Two years later, Pilot Travel Centers and Flying J Inc. entered an agreement, officially creating Pilot Flying J on July 1, 2010.
