Role Overview
Pieper Electric is seeking a Union Electrician with expertise in medium voltage systems to join our team to . This role will focus on the installation, testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting of medium voltage distribution equipment across Southern WI and Northern IL. Experience with NETA standards and testing is strongly preferred.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform installation, maintenance, repair, and testing of medium voltage electrical systems (e.g. switchgear, transformers, cables, relays, protective devices)
- Conduct test procedures (acceptance, maintenance, diagnostic) and document results
- Utilize testing instruments (e.g. Megger, Hipot, TTR, relay test sets, VLF, primary/secondary injection)
- Read and interpret electrical diagrams, schematics, one‑lines, and single/double line drawings
- Lead safe switching, grounding, lockout/tagout, and hazard mitigation procedures (including arc flash safety)
- Diagnose faults, perform root cause analysis, and recommend corrective measures
- Mentor or supervise junior electricians or apprentices as needed
- Prepare detailed test reports, summarize anomalies, deviations, and action plans
- Assist with outage planning, commissioning, startup, and punch list remediation
- Coordinate with other trades, project managers, and operations teams to ensure smooth execution
- Maintain, calibrate, and verify accuracy of tools and test equipment
- Participate in emergency response or on‑call rotations as required by project demands
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Journeyman electrician certification or equivalent union classification
- Minimum 5+ years of experience working with medium voltage systems
- Hands-on experience with electrical testing and diagnostics in distribution environments
- Familiarity with NETA testing standards (maintenance & acceptance)
- Strong knowledge of safety regulations (OSHA, NFPA 70E, NEC)
- Proficiency in using test instruments and interpreting results
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and system designs
- Strong communication skills and ability to document findings
- Knowledge of infrared thermography
- Ability to travel to job sites
- Capability to lift 50‑lbs, climb ladders/scaffolding, work in varied environmental conditions
- Valid driver’s license with clean driving record
Preferred / Nice-to-Haves
- NETA Certification (Level II, III, or IV) or experience at NETA‑accredited organizations
- Prior supervisory or crew lead experience
- Experience in commissioning or startup of medium voltage systems
- Familiarity with relay programming or control systems (SEL, ABB, Siemens, etc.)
- Experience in union environments and collective bargaining compliance
