The Lead Estimator is responsible for managing the preparation of accurate and competitive cost estimates for a variety of projects. This role provides guidance to estimator trainees and temporary staff, oversees estimate development, and ensures coordination with internal teams. The Lead Estimator reviews drawings and specifications, performs complete take-offs, identifies value engineering opportunities, and supports the successful handoff to project management. This position plays a key role in resource planning and maintaining consistency across all estimating efforts.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Estimating:
- Review proposal specifications, drawings, and attend bid meetings to determine scope of work and required contents of the estimate
- Prepare disciplined and accurate estimates by calculating complete take-off of scope of work
- Submit bid and proposals on projects that have been estimated
- Prepare detailed estimate breakdowns and provide relevant information to Project Managers
- Introduce cost-saving strategies and redesign opportunities through value engineering when applicable
- Complete design and perform calculations for services, feeders, and branch circuits for design-build estimates
- Prepare estimating reports and documentation as requested management
Mentorship & Oversight:
- Help provide guidance and direction to estimator team and trainees
- Review and approve take-offs and estimated completed by estimators
- Direct and assist other estimators assigned to projects on an as-needed basis
- Coordinate the overall estimating effort for specific estimates, ensuring accuracy and consistency
Planning & Coordination:
- Maintain communication with internal departments regarding services, estimates, and project requirements
- Manage the estimating backlog and determine the estimator resources required to meet project deadlines
- Complete additional assignments as directed by Manager
Safety/Hazard Recognition & Elimination:
- Pre-plan and identify the methods to eliminate hazards daily by work task.
- Execute skill in observing habits and hazards of others and bringing it to their attention.
- Uphold safety as the most important goal of our company. Support goal of achieving zero accidents.
- Promote and encourage open communication between field and office regarding all safety concerns, suggestions, improvements, and PPE needed.
- Obtain safety training as expected by all company personnel.
Qualifications and Requirements
- High School Diploma (or equivalent) required
- Higher education in a relevant field preferred
- Approximately 10 years of estimating experience required
- Approximately 8 years of experience with estimating software and onscreen estimating required
Experience, Skill and Abilities
- Positive safety attitude and personal integrity -- both are non-negotiable
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (including Excel, Word, Outlook, and Teams)
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
- Strong interpersonal skills; ability to interact with all levels of the company and customers
- Effective at working independently and as a team leader, with the ability to guide and motivate others
Physical Requirements
- Office environment, requiring sitting and standing and extended amounts of time using a computer/keyboard at a single workstation.
