Youth Engagement Officer
Ongoing, Part Time role – 64 Hours per Fortnight (0.8 EFT)

 

The Victorian Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Cancer Service is a multidisciplinary, statewide service based at Peter Mac and providing a range of supports to young people aged 15-25 years with cancer, and their family. The AYA Cancer Service is committed to working in partnership with young people through meaningful participation, engagement, and consultation. 

 

The Youth Engagement Officer plays a key role in engaging and supporting adolescents and young adults (AYA) with cancer who are receiving care at Peter Mac. This position is responsible for the implementation, coordination, and ongoing delivery of the Youth Participation Program within the AYA Cancer Service. 

 

Key Responsibilities
•    Coordinate and support the Youth Cancer Action Board (YCAB) and the broader AYA community
•    Develop, implement, and evaluate a range of youth engagement initiatives and peer-based programs
•    Support young people who are undergoing or have completed cancer treatment to participate meaningfully in service improvement
•    Collaborate with the multidisciplinary AYA team to ensure youth participation activities align with service priorities and organisational policies
•    Contribute to the strategic objectives of the Victorian AYA Cancer Service
 

About You
You will have experience engaging and working with young people, ideally within health, community, or youth-focused settings. You are highly organised, collaborative, and passionate about amplifying youth voice within services.

 

Remuneration as per Allied Health Professionals (Victorian Public Sector) (Single Interest Employers) Enterprise Agreement 2021-2026. Youth Worker Grade 3, Year 1 (YW41): $77,740.00 (full-time equivalent - to be prorated for Part Time) - Grade 3, Year 3 (YW43): $84,770.40 (full-time equivalent - to be prorated for Part Time), dependent on candidate experience. To be discussed with Hiring Manager.

Position Summary

The Youth Engagement Officer is a 0.8 EFT ongoing position responsible for engaging and supporting young people with cancer who are receiving care at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre (Peter Mac).

The role is responsible for the implementation, coordination, and ongoing delivery of the Youth Participation Program for the Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Service. This includes coordinating and supporting the Youth Cancer Action Board (YCAB) and the broader AYA Community, and developing, implementing, and evaluating a suite of engagement initiatives and peer-based groups for young people who are undergoing and/or have completed cancer treatment.

The Youth Engagement Officer works collaboratively with the multidisciplinary AYA team and key stakeholders to ensure youth participation activities align with service priorities, organisatonal policies, and the strategic objectives of the Victorian AYA Cancer Service.

Skills

 

Essential Requirements  
  • Tertiary qualification(s) in Youth Work or Community Development, with a minimum of three years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to youth engagement and the meaningful participation of young people in service design, delivery and evaluation.  
  • Proven experience in developing and delivering effective group programs designed to enhance the health and wellbeing of young people.
  • Sound knowledge of relevant legislation and Child Safe Standards when working with young people.
  • Excellent written, interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong planning and organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and as part of a team.
  • Flexibility to work outside business hours as required.
Desirable Requirements  
  • Experience supporting young people facing challenges, with knowledge of trauma-informed or healing-oriented approaches.
  • Experience in consultation and engagement with young people and the broader organisation or community.

  • Demonstrates understanding of, and commitment to, youth participation in policy, service, and program development.
  • Builds and maintains effective relationships with key stakeholders to support youth engagement.
  • Implements promotional and communication strategies to raise the profile of youth participation across Peter Mac and the broader community.
  • Practices youth-friendly approaches, including flexible timing (after-hours and weekends) to maximise participation.

Support the ongoing implementation of the Youth Participation Program (YCAB and broader AYA Community)

  • Coordinates bi-monthly YCAB meetings, including agendas, minutes, and follow-up in consultation with young people.
  • Supports YCAB Co-chairs in skill development and confidence to succeed in their roles.
  • Recruits, manages, and supports YCAB members in line with structures and processes.
  • Develops and facilitates training, development, and skill-building opportunities for YCAB members.
  • Provides the AYA Community with information on engagement opportunities, including annual updates and feedback.
  • Triages youth participation requests from across the Victorian cancer sector.
  • Maintains databases and governance processes to meet reporting requirements.
  • Evaluates and reports on youth participation initiatives for quality improvement and service development.

Support ongoing opportunities for peer-to-peer engagement and connection in the in/outpatient environment

  • Plans, coordinates, promotes, and facilitates peer-to-peer interactions and group programs for young people, with accountability for program delivery.
  • Develops creative engagement opportunities for young people admitted to wards/inpatient setting.
  • Coordinates and delivers group programs tailored to young people’s needs.
  • Develops and maintains sustainable partnerships with community providers to expand youth participation initiatives during and after treatment.
