POSITION SPECIFICS

We are seeking a Department Head for the Expeditionary Manufacturing and Repair (EMR) Department to join our team in the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State. The Expeditionary Manufacturing and Repair Department focuses on developing and implementing sustainment technologies for shipyard, pier side, and on-board repairs, solid state consolidation methods including Cold Spray, hot isostatic pressing (HIP), and friction stir welding (FSW), heat treating, and materials characterization.  The department head is responsible for development, optimization, and transition of materials processes for research, prototype development, and transition of sustainment technologies to the Navy and Army.  This position may be filled as either a Research and Development Engineer or a non-tenure Research Faculty.

You will:

  • Lead a group of engineers, scientists, and support staff who are engaged in the development and validation of sustainment technologies, materials characterization, solid state consolidation technologies, and engage in multidisciplinary teams

  • Lead the development of proposals and projects that further our knowledge of sustainment technologies

  • Provide project updates to sponsors, present research findings at conferences, and publish in peer-reviewed journals

  • Collaborate with engineers in other technical areas across ARL

  • Plan, staff, and execute programs to ensure all departmental staff and faculty are appropriately and sufficiently tasked at all times

  • Recruit, retain, and define performance expectations of department staff and faculty

  • Identify professional development and training opportunities

  • Mentor and encourage creativity in innovative technologies and research

  • Evaluate professional growth through performance reviews

Additional responsibilities for higher level position:

  • Contribute to the design, development, implementation, and analysis of technical engineering products, systems, and subsystems

  • Investigate and evaluate practical applicability of scientific theories and engineering principles to develop and improve various engineering systems; identify technical approach for solving problems and meeting customer/grantor needs

  • Apply standard practices and techniques in specific situations, correlate data, recognize discrepancies in results and follow operations through a series of related detailed steps or processes

  • Conduct experiments/tests in the laboratory/field to test, prove, or modify theoretical propositions on basis of research findings and experiences of others researching in related technical areas; may include taking measurements and recording observations, collecting, compiling, and processing data; may include planning/designing experiments or tests and supervising the execution thereof

Non-tenure faculty rank will be commensurate with education level and experience.

Required skills/experience areas include:

  • Broad knowledge of sustainment and repair technologies and process for metals and other materials used by Navy, Army, and Coast Guard

  • Cold Spray and Cold Spray Additive Manufacturing

  • Materials characterization including tensile testing, hardness, corrosion, wear, and impact

  • Non-destructive inspection methods

  • Demonstrated success leading a team of engineers/scientists

  • Previous success with collaborations in a multi-disciplinary, team-oriented culture

  • Proposal and technical writing skills

  • Proven track record of developing and transitioning technologies to the Navy

  • Ability to travel and lead/support expeditionary repairs

  • Current eligibility for access to classified information at the Secret level or higher and may be subject to a government background investigation to upgrade clearance eligibility, if required

Preferred skills/experience areas include:

  • Repair and sustainment of metals

  • Energetic materials

  • Mechanical and thermo-mechanical testing

  • Heat treating  

  • Fabricating test articles, prototypes, and/or final parts
