We’re looking for a Senior PostgreSQL Database Administrator to provide technical leadership across our PostgreSQL estate, ensuring the performance, scalability, security, and resilience of our mission-critical data platforms. This role is central to shaping database strategy, leading cloud migrations, and driving operational excellence across global, high-availability systems.


What you get to do:

Database Architecture & Strategy

  • Lead the design and implementation of secure, scalable PostgreSQL database architectures across hybrid and cloud environments including AWS RDS, Aurora, and Redshift.
  • Translate operational and business requirements into optimised PostgreSQL schemas, storage strategies, and replication topologies.
  • Evaluate and integrate emerging PostgreSQL technologies and features to support platform growth, resilience, and long-term sustainability.

Database Administration & Performance

  • Oversee the administration of PostgreSQL databases including configuration, upgrades, patching, and lifecycle management.
  • Lead complex PostgreSQL performance tuning initiatives through deep query analysis, execution plan optimisation, and resource allocation.
  • Provide technical guidance to engineers and junior DBAs on PostgreSQL schema design, indexing strategies, and query optimisation best practices.

Cloud Migrations & Modernisation

  • Lead end-to-end PostgreSQL migration projects from on-premise to cloud-native platforms, including lift-and-shift and re-platforming initiatives.
  • Ensure seamless integration of PostgreSQL with cloud infrastructure while maintaining data integrity, availability, and performance.
  • Design and implement solutions supporting elasticity, auto-scaling, and disaster recovery in cloud environments.

Backup, Recovery & High Availability

  • Design and manage robust PostgreSQL backup, recovery, and disaster recovery strategies to ensure rapid restoration and data protection.
  • Implement high availability architectures using PostgreSQL replication, clustering, and failover mechanisms.
  • Regularly test and validate disaster recovery procedures across environments to meet business continuity requirements.

Security & Governance

  • Enforce enterprise-grade PostgreSQL security standards including encryption, role-based access control, auditing, and compliance adherence.
  • Collaborate with Information Security and Compliance teams to support audits and regulatory requirements.
  • Proactively identify and remediate PostgreSQL vulnerabilities and security risks.

Monitoring, Automation & Scripting

  • Implement monitoring and alerting solutions to proactively track PostgreSQL performance, capacity, and operational health.
  • Develop automation and tooling using Python, Bash, or PowerShell to streamline PostgreSQL administration and reduce operational overhead.
  • Leverage PostgreSQL community and open-source tools such as pgBadger, pgPool, pgBouncer, and pgAdmin for optimisation and visibility.

Collaboration, Documentation & Leadership

  • Act as a PostgreSQL subject matter expert and trusted advisor across database initiatives and platform projects.
  • Collaborate with engineering, DevOps, and infrastructure teams to support CI/CD pipelines and production releases.
  • Maintain clear technical documentation, define PostgreSQL standards, and mentor junior DBAs to build internal capability and best practices.

Requirements

What it takes to succeed:

  • Minimum 7 years of experience in database administration with advanced, hands-on expertise in PostgreSQL.
  • Strong expertise in PostgreSQL architecture, internals, and operational management within enterprise environments.
  • Deep experience in PostgreSQL performance tuning, query optimisation, and schema design at scale.
  • Strong understanding of cloud-native PostgreSQL services, particularly AWS RDS, Aurora, and Redshift.
  • Proficiency in automation and scripting for PostgreSQL operations using Python, Bash, or PowerShell.
  • Advanced knowledge of PostgreSQL backup, replication, high availability, and disaster recovery concepts.
  • Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL ecosystem tools such as pgBadger, pgPool, Slony, and pgBouncer.
  • Strong knowledge of database security, access controls, encryption, and compliance frameworks.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills with the ability to influence and guide technical teams.
  • A strategic, continuous-improvement mindset with strong ownership and accountability.
