As an award winning 20,000 acre development, the development encompasses a private member’s only club which includes a marina, restaurants, an equestrian center, a shooting club, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course, The Crossroads Reversable King Collins Golf Course, Anson Point Golf Course designed by Coore and Crenshaw, a lawn and racquet club, a community farm, and more.  In addition, Palmetto Bluff has an extensive nature preserve, walking trails, retail shopping, art gallery, and a vibrant village, all which pay homage to the region’s rich heritage.

Job Summary:

The Conservancy is looking for an environmental educator who can conduct educational programs for Palmetto Bluff residents, inn guests, and the public. This role blends environmental stewardship with human relations and acts as a bridge between people and nature. With this connection, the person hired for this role will be responsible for providing accurate ecological information in a professional manner to a wide audience ranging in age and background.

Implementing and executing educational programs is the primary responsibility of this role, but the person hired may also be tasked with assisting in surveys, research, and land and wildlife management projects when able.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Plan, implement and expand educational programs for owners, Inn guests, groups, and the public, including:
    • Creating and executing an annual Calendar of Events for the Conservancy to include:
      • First Friday Lectures/Brown Bag Lunches
      • Nature-based educational outings and activities
      • Workshops and special offerings (i.e. Forest Bathing, collaborations with Fitness and the Marina, Owl Prowls, Creatures of the Night, Marsh Ecology, etc.
      • Field Trips
      • Kids camp activities
      • Assisting Archaeology with cultural-based programs
    • Handling all functions of these events, including arrangements for signups, speakers, housing, payment, program fees, etc.
    • Publicizing events and summarizing the event in writing and with photos.
    • Creating and sending out the weekly newsletter for the Conservancy.
    • Maintaining and updating a list of Conservancy offerings on the PB website and the member calendar
  • Assist with surveys and research being conducted at PBC:
    • Cavity nest box research
    • Monitoring bluebird boxes
    • Aid in spotlight surveys
    • Setting up detectors, cameras, or traps for related surveys and studies
  • Build and maintain the PBC databases for event attendance and volunteers/volunteer hours.
  • Creating content for the PBC Facebook group and providing content for Palmetto Bluff Marketing.
  • Assist with maintaining the Conservancy’s native plant gardens.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree and/or appropriate work experience working in biological science, or related field
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Excellent public speaking skills
  • Competency in Word Processing, Excel, Powerpoint
  • Proficiency in ARCview GIS software preferred
  • Expertise in the ecology of the Southeast
  • Excellent research and analytic skills
  • Valid drivers license required

Physical Requirements:

  • Work tasks may be performed both indoors and outdoors. Will encounter variable outdoor weather conditions, including hot, cold, windy and wet weather.
  • Must be able to lift 50lbs.
  • May need to remain standing for extended periods of time.
  • Able to work near moving/mechanical parts
  • Requires grasping, writing, standing, sitting, walking, repetitive motions, bending, climbing, listening and hearing ability and visual acuity.
  • Talking and listening occur continuously in the process of communicating with owners, guests and supervisors.
  • Vision occurs continuously with the most common visual functions being those of near vision and depth perception.
  • Requires manual dexterity to use and operate all necessary equipment.
  • Must have finger dexterity to be able to operate office equipment such as computers, printers, multi-line touch tone phone, filing cabinets, photocopiers, dolly and other office equipment as needed.
