How you will make an impact (Job Summary)

SPX is a diverse team of unique individuals who all make an impact. As a Chipper, you will be responsible for constructing, repairing, and maintaining patterns, core boxes, flasks, and related tooling used in mold and core production. Interprets blueprints and sketches to plan and execute accurate builds, selects suitable materials, and applies trade mathematics for precise fabrication. Operates metalworking machines, including welders, drills, milling machines, and grinders. Uses hand tools and measuring instruments to shape, assemble, and finish patterns. Applies finishes such as shellac and performs modifications or repairs based on design changes. Ensures quality through progressive checks and maintains work area cleanliness. Utilizes safety equipment and power tools including forklifts as needed. Performs related tasks as assigned.

 

What you can expect in this role (Job Responsibilities)

  1. Technical Fabrication and Construction
    1. Read and interpret blueprints/sketches
    2. Select appropriate materials (lumber, wax, metals)
    3. Construct and assemble patterns and core boxes
    4. Calculate dimensions using trade math and shop formulae
    5. Fit, finish, and reinforce patterns to spec
  2. Equipment Operation and Tool Use
    1. Operate metalworking machines (milling, drills, grinders)
    2. Use welding and cutting equipment (arc welder, acetylene torch)
    3. Handle hand tools, measuring instruments, and jigs/fixtures
    4. Operate power equipment (e.g., forklift)
  3. Maintenance, Alteration, and Safety
    1. Perform repairs/alterations to patterns and flasks
    2. Apply finishes and stencils to parts
    3. Clean machines and work area
    4. Ensure proper use of PPE and safety tools

 

What we are looking for (Experience, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education)

We each bring something to the table, and we are looking for someone who has:

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Ability to compute calculations for materials
  • Ability to work in demanding manufacturing environment
  • Previous manufacturing and/or foundry experience (Preferred)

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

  • Ability to lift 50-75lbs
  • Must be able to stand, bend, and lift for extended periods, as required by the job.
  • Requires the use of appropriate safety precautions and personal protective equipment (PPE) due to potential hazards associated with machinery or chemicals.
