Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) III — Position Summary

The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) III evaluates, interprets, and analyzes blood and body fluids using automated and complex manual methodologies. This role follows established policies and procedures to ensure the highest quality of laboratory results within designated timeframes.

 

Schedule: Dayshift, 6a-2:30pm Mon-Fri in the Molecular Department

Responsibilities

Education & Training

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Successful completion of an approved clinical laboratory training internship.

Licensure / Certification

  • Must maintain a current Florida Medical Technologist license in required specialties.
  • National certification (ASCP, AAB, or AMT) preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience required.
  • Department-specific competencies may be required depending on area of assignment.

Qualifications

Essential Functions

Specimen & Testing Responsibilities

  • Evaluate specimens for quality and pre‑analytical errors.
  • Perform high‑complexity testing.
  • Verify test results and quality control data for accuracy and reliability.
  • Perform, evaluate, and document all quality control, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting procedures.
  • Verify instrument performance standards (e.g., linearity, reportable range, method comparison).
  • Ensure proper utilization, preparation, and storage of reagents and supplies.

Troubleshooting & Quality Assurance

  • Utilize critical thinking and theoretical knowledge to troubleshoot unusual testing situations.
  • Identify potential sources of error across pre‑analytical, analytical, and post‑analytical phases.
  • Provide guidance on interfering substances or error sources.
  • Report unresolved issues to the supervisor.
  • Participate in developing departmental policies and procedures related to test performance, quality control, and preventative maintenance.
  • Assist with inventory management and quality improvement initiatives.

Communication & Collaboration

  • Communicate critical results to patient caregivers in a timely manner.
  • Explain complex or sensitive information clearly and effectively.
  • Report work activities, instrument issues, supply concerns, and pending work to the oncoming MLS at shift change.
  • Respond to work‑related technical inquiries.
  • Provide guidance and direction to less experienced team members; receive assistance only for the most complex procedures.
  • Assist in training new team members and students.

Operational Responsibilities

  • Work independently within broad guidelines.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in laboratory computer systems, including ordering, resulting, and inquiry functions.
  • Maintain punctual and regular attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies and applicable federal, state, and local standards.
  • Comply with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.

  • Perform specimen collection, receiving, and processing as needed.
  • Answer departmental phones and greet visitors.
  • Maintain current job knowledge to support training and instruction.
  • Participate actively in the laboratory quality improvement program.
  • Follow infection control and safety standards; maintain a clean, organized work area.
  • Uphold confidentiality of patient records and departmental/hospital matters.
