Position Overview
The Financial Counselor serves as a key resource for patients navigating the financial aspects of their care. This role acts as the first point of contact, providing clear, empathetic guidance regarding insurance coverage, benefits, payment options, and billing processes to ensure a smooth and supportive patient experience.
Education & Training
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- Completion of Patient Financial Services Orientation and annual education requirements
Licensure / Certification
Experience Requirements
- Minimum two (2) years of experience in:
- Financial services
- Business office operations
- Customer service environment
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Typing proficiency required
- Minimum one (1) year of PC/Windows experience
Essential Functions
- Demonstrates an understanding of Orlando Health’s commitment to exceptional customer service
- Maintains a professional, positive, and patient‑focused demeanor at all times
- Accurately gathers and enters patient and guarantor demographic and financial information
- Contacts Primary Care or Admitting Physicians to obtain:
- Authorizations
- Diagnosis details
- Procedure information
- Explains required forms and obtains appropriate patient/guarantor signatures
- Verifies insurance benefits and obtains necessary authorizations from payers
- Provides clear explanations of insurance benefits, co‑pays, deductibles, and self‑pay balances
- Collects payments for services rendered when applicable
- Documents benefit and authorization information in the registration system
- Assembles patient records, including insurance cards, photo identification, and advance directives
- Communicates effectively with patients, team members, and leadership to support efficient workflows
