We are now looking for a suitable person to fill the following position in the School of Arts and Social Sciences:
Major Duties and Responsibilities
The appointee(s) will assist the Principal Investigator in the research project “Mapping Meaning: Digital Philology of Di 帝 and Zhong 中 in Early Chinese Texts” (Project Code: R6945). The appointee will be responsible mainly for the following:
Corpus Construction and Text Mining: Collecting, organizing, and documenting materials from pre-existing electronic corpus of classical Chinese texts and/or creating new electronic corpus according to project needs; using Python-based tools (e.g., Jieba or similar segmentation libraries) to perform word segmentation and preliminary part-of-speech / semantic labeling on selected texts;
Digital and Quantitative Analysis: Running automated analyses (e.g., KWIC) to extract occurrences of key terms and their immediate contexts, identify meaningful associations across corpora; applying thematic categories in automated tagging;
Visualization of Data: Generating co-occurrence network graphs, heatmaps, and Sankey diagrams and related visualizations to represent frequency, textual proximity, and sequential patterns of keyword clusters
Candidates
Candidates should possess the following qualifications, experience and competence:
A Bachelor’s degree or above for appointment as Research Assistant II; applicants without a degree may be considered for appointment at the rank of Technical Assistant
Experience with data visualization tools and methods, including network graphs (e.g., co-occurrence networks), heatmaps, and flow diagrams (e.g., Sankey diagrams)
Prior research experience, particularly in Digital Humanities or related quantitative approaches to textual analysis, will be an advantage
