Job title: Sustainable Formulation Lead

The Sustainable Formulation Lead will be responsible for developing and implementing sustainable formulation strategies that minimize environmental impact while maintaining product efficacy, safety, and quality standards. This role drives innovation in eco‑design by partnering closely with Product Development teams to build, implement, and continuously evolve the Sustainable Formulation Framework, supporting Opella’s overall ingredient and formulation strategy—Sustainability by Design.
Key Responsibilities:
Sustainable Formulation Development : embed sustainability principles into formulation design to minimize environmental impact.
- Sustainable Ingredients Framework:
Develop and maintain evaluation tools and assessment processes for excipients and active ingredients; provide clear guidance to Product Development and project teams.
- Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) Management:
Deploy PCF programs across formulation activities, conduct carbon footprint analyses, and improve methodologies in collaboration with internal and external experts. Equip teams with tools and training for carbon reduction.
- Environmental Sustainability Assessments:
Lead the implementation of the formulation Ecodesign roadmap. Build and deploy LCIA (Life Cycle Impact Assessment) methodologies across product portfolios.
- Innovative Ingredients Integration:
Embed sustainability guidelines and risk assessments into product design from the earliest development phases.
Ingredient Transparency:
Support brand transparency initiatives by providing scientific assessments, risk evaluations, and technical recommendations to ensure credible and compliant disclosures.
Stakeholder Engagement & Training:
Partner with teams across Sustainability, Public Affairs, Regulatory, Manufacturing & Supply, Procurement, Quality, and Product Development.
Deliver training programs and serve as the subject‑matter expert for sustainable formulation practices.
Ability to manage and influence different level of internal stakeholders
Execution Tracking & Framework Adaptation:
Track the implementation of Sustainability by Design across formulas and projects.
Monitor regulatory developments, guidance from health authorities, and industry trends to proactively update sustainability frameworks and maintain compliance readiness.
Innovation & Roadmap Integration:
Build strategic relationships within the innovation ecosystem to identify, develop, and scale sustainable formulation solutions.
Required Qualifications:
- PhD or Master’s degree in environmental science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related technical field.
- 5+ years on a similar role, ideally in pharmaceuticals or consumer healthcare.
- Excellent project management and cross‑functional leadership skills.
- Ability to build networks and partnership models internally and externally.
- Strong communication and ability to simplify technical subjects for non‑technical teams.
- Strong knowledge of Product Carbon Footprint (PCF), Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), and Environmental Impact Assessment.
- Understanding of regulatory requirements related to environmental sustainability and safety.
- Strong digital capabilities across sustainability software (LCA tools, PCF platforms) and data analytics.
- Knowledge of environmental or ecotoxicological risk assessment is a plus.
- English required; French is a plus.
